“Deontae, did you forget that you were supposed to turn right?” Diamond asked Deontae as he continued to drive pass Miguel’s house.

“No, I didn’t.” Deontae says. “Look, it ain’t gon’ be none of that Scooby Doo shit going on, aight? We’re going home and we’re sticking together.”

“She doesn’t want us there! She kicked both of us out, remember?” She reminds him.

“She agreed to stay at a hotel for the next few days, so we’re good.”

“He’s right, Diamond.” Miguel says. “It might be too much for you to go back to my place so soon.”

She sighs before giving in. “You sure she isn’t coming back?”

“For six hundred dollars, she better be enjoying the fuck out of that hotel room.” He says as he pulls into the driveway. There was an unknown car already parked in the driveway. Although it was unknown, it still looked familiar.

“Who’s car is that?” Diamond asked. “I thought no one was home.”

“It’s probably some woman that Uncle Rick invited over.” He says before unfastening his seatbelt. “I’ll go in first and make sure everything’s okay.”

“Uh, Deontae what—”

“I know you’re going to miss me.” He cuts Valentina off. “I’ll be back, baby.” He kisses her cheek before getting out of the car. He walks up to the front door and turns the doorknob only to discover that it was unlocked. “I am too cute to die. Fuck am I tryna be? A hero?” He says out loud to himself. “You are a strong, independent black man! You can do this!” He encourages himself before stepping inside.

He saw a woman and a man sitting on the couch, it looked like they were in the middle of an argument. They turned their heads in his direction. He looked at them confused, wondering why they weren’t explaining themselves.

“Who are you?” Deontae asked them as the woman slowly stood up and stared at him like she hasn’t seen him in ages.

“Well don’t just stand there.” She smiles before opening her arms. “Come give your mother a hug, darling.”

“Wha—” He couldn’t even finish what he was going to say as he began to look around the living room at the pictures of Sonya. She still looks the same, just a little bit older. “Who’s he?”

The man chuckles before saying, “You don’t recognize your own father?” He asked

The man chuckles before saying, “You don’t recognize your own father?” He asked. “I’ve been gone far too long, haven’t I?”

“What the fuck is this? A failed attempt to host a family reunion?”

“Watch your mouth!” Sonya yells at him. She was strongly fighting the urge to slap him. She’s not a woman that you want to piss off, but she stayed calm so she can get what she came for.

“Who the hell are you to tell me what to do when you haven’t been in my life for the past sixteen years?” He angrily yells at her. “You randomly email me out of the blue, and then you pop up at the house. What kind of nut shit is that?”

“Well, he is right.” His father says as he lights his blunt. “You have been a pretty shitty mother, Sonya.”

“Sebastián, you couldn’t have been a better father if you had the chance. Oh wait, you did!” She says while laughing. “How’s that daughter you and your ex wife adopted? Oh, I forgot! She hates your worthless guts!”

“You’ve been bringing the same old shit up for the past thirteen years.” He yells at her. “You still married me, didn’t you?”

While they were in the middle of arguing, Deontae left without them noticing. When he got back to the car, he noticed that Diamond and Miguel had both fallen asleep.

“Where are we going?” Valentina whispered. “Is everything okay?”

“I’ll explain everything to you when we get to your house.”

“How the hell is it my fault that he got away?” Sonya angrily asked as she plopped down on the couch. “You can’t go two minutes without starting something with me! I hate you so much!”

“Well then why don’t you just leave me, Mi amor?” Sebastián asked, of course he would never let that happen but he’s given her many opportunities in the past to leave, and she’s always turned them down.

“Keep asking, and I just might.” She threatens him. Her threats only made him chuckle because that’s all they were; threats.

“Who the fuck up in here—” Rick paused as soon as he entered the living room. He saw Sebastián, and was enraged just by his presence. He was just sitting in the chair, smoking like this was just something he does every Tuesday night, and it made his blood boil. He hated Sebastián with every bone in his body. Deep down inside, he still felt like everything was partially his fault. If he just would’ve stayed home instead of running around in the streets, this wouldn’t have happened.

“Stop it!” Sonya yells as Rick and Sebastián throw punches at each other back and forth. Sonya pulls her gun out of her purse and fires it into the ceiling, but that didn’t stop them from fighting.

Rick slams Sebastián into the glass coffee table, causing it to shatter. Sonya screamed as a piece of glass came flying at her.

“Are you okay?” Rick asked as he walked over to her to check for cuts. “Why the fuck did you scream?” He angrily asked after realizing that she was okay.

“That was the only way to get you two to stop fighting.” Sonya says after rolling her eyes. “Oh, and by the way, thanks for caring about me.” She sarcastically says to her husband.

“Anytime, calabaza.” Sebastián says while smiling as he stands up and brushes himself off before sitting down on the couch.

“How the hell did y’all get in here anyway?” Rick asked.

“The same way I always got in here, Rick.” Sebastián says just to irritate Rick, and it was working.

Sonya scoffs. “Doris never got those locks changed.” She says while shaking her head. She couldn’t stand her mother. They have always been at each other’s throats and she doesn’t plan on changing that. She’s patiently waiting for the day she gets a call saying her mother died, and she hopes that Doris suffers. “Anyway, Rick I need you to call Deontae and make him come home now.” Sonya says.

“It’s not my job to control your son.” Rick says, he knew more about Sonya and Sebastián than he was letting on. That wasn’t a life that Deontae needed to be caught up in.

“Cause your only job is giving up ass in the pen, right?” Sebastián asked while chuckling. Just as Rick was about to beat his ass, Sonya stepped in between them.

“Will you two stop it?!” Sonya yells. “You’re both acting like children! It’s a shame I have to parent you.”

“Like you know how.” Rick said, which cut Sonya deep. It was something she always regretted, but it was for the best.

“That’s a good one.” Sebastián says while laughing and nodding in agreement.

“I didn’t come here to be insulted.” She says as she tries to keep herself together.

“Why did you come here at all?!” Rick yells. “And why did you bring this bitch with you when you know I hate him?!”

“We don’t need him to get our son to come back to this dump. We’ll find him on our own.” Sebastián says as he stands up.

“Stay the hell away from him!” Rick warns them. “He’s doing good without you two in his life fucking it up more than what you already have.”

“He’s the heir to our business.” Sonya informs him. “On Deontae’s twenty-first birthday, Sebastián will be stepping down. Over the next three years he’ll be trained to take over and become the next leader.”

Rick chuckles at Sonya’s stupidity, she truly has lost her mind. “Deontae ain’t built for this thug life shit, Sonya.”

“He’s a Martinez!” Sebastián proudly says. “He’s built for anything.”

“Martinez?” Rick asked surprised. This whole time he thought his last name was Wilson. Looks like that was a lie too.

“Yes!” Sebastián smiles. “Deontae Javier Martinez.”

“No, Sonya gave them our last name, right?” Rick asked as he looks at Sonya who was really getting annoyed with this whole situation. She came here for her son, and she wasn’t leaving without him.

“Look, that’s not what I came here to talk about!” Sonya says, before sighing. “Their last names don’t matter, Rick!”

“Like hell it does!” Rick yells at her. “Does mama know about this?”

“I changed my last name to Wilson in order to pursue a career in education—”

“I didn’t ask you, motherfucka!” Rick yells at him. “Sonya, you better start talkin’ now!”

“Doris made me put Ramirez down on the birth certificate, but Sebastián has his ways.” Sonya says, even though she didn’t feel the need to explain herself to him. “We had it changed to the correct last name a few years back.”

“A few years back?” He asked while Sebastián just sat back smirking and chuckling. “How many?”

“About eleven years ago.” She answered him. “But that’s not important!”

“They don’t even know their real last names are! How is that not important, Sonya?” Rick yells at her. He was truly disgusted with her and what she’s turned into. He couldn’t even continue to blame it all on Sebastián anymore.

“Back to more important things.” Sonya shifted the conversation back to what she originally came here to talk about. “Whether he likes it or not, he’s going to be taking over when his father steps down.” She says. “It’s tradition, and he’ll be the first Afro-Latino Martinez to take over.”

He stares at his sister, his little sister in disbelief. She was so beautiful, but still so ugly. He didn’t know what to say or what to do at this point, but he knew that if they stayed here any longer, he’d be right back in jail. With all the crazy shit going on, he had to be here for his niece and nephew.

“Y’all gotta get the fuck up outta here before I violate my probation.” Rick says as he holds the door open for them. “And stay the hell away from those kids!”

Sonya angrily grabs her purse as she walks out the front door with her husband right behind her. Rick has always been Sonya’s favorite brother, but he was really starting to piss her off.

“We’re wasting precious time!” Sonya says after getting in the car. “You just had to argue with me.”

“Don’t try to blame this on me!” He says. “Tell your son to take his panties off and put on some drawls.” Sebastián says as he backs out of the driveway.

“Wait a minute…that girl that he’s always with.” Sonya says as she searches around in her purse for her phone. “Her!” She says while pointing to a picture of Valentina. They’ve always been involved in their children’s lives. Never seen, never heard, but always watching.

“Ah, he has good taste.” Sebastián says as Sonya scrolls through all the pictures that she had of Valentina. “If we can find the girl, we’ll find the boy.” He said as he stopped at a red light. “Now, what are we going to do about Diamond?”

“Can you believe we’re going to be grandparents?” Sonya asked, she truly didn’t know how to feel. She was too young to be a grandmother, but thought this could be the perfect opportunity for a do over with the next generation. “Doris thought she was such the perfect mother and that she could raise a child better than me, but everyone gets pregnant on her watch.” She chuckles while shaking her head.

“We’re going to be some pretty good looking grandparents.” Sebastián said as he stares at his wife then turns his attention back to the road. His phone began to rang. “Get that for me, novia.”

“Hello.” Sonya answers her husband’s phone.

“Mrs. Martinez, it’s Carlos.” He says. “I have some information on the incident with your daughter.”

She quickly puts the phone on speaker so she and Sebastián can both hear what he has to say.

“Okay, we’re listening.” Sonya says as she prepares herself for what he was about to say.

“It turns out her boyfriend, Miguel Campbell got arrested for it.” He tells them. “But I got word that somebody’s setting ole dude up.”

“Miguel Campbell? Does he have any ties with Hell’s Lovers?” Sebastián asked.

“Yeah, he’s affiliated with Hell’s Lovers, but he’s real low key about it. They call him Young Slamma.” He tells them. “Said he’s following in his uncle and father’s footsteps.”

“Thanks, Carlos.” Sebastián says. “We’ll take it from here.” He says before Sonya hangs up.

“You know this boy?” Sonya asked.

“Not exactly.” He answers her. “Me and his uncle used to be real tight. We moved bricks together back in the day.”

“When did your little bromance end?” She sarcastically asked.

“I left town without him when shit got too hot. He’s been pissed ever since, but sending his little nephew in to hurt my daughter, doesn’t sound like him.” He says. “Roy is a very direct person. He targets the person he’s mad at, not their family. This has to be someone else, someone close.” He tells her. “It seems real personal. Maybe we’re overlooking something.”

“Are you sure it couldn’t have been Miguel?” Sonya asked. “He did beat your brother up in that gas station a few weeks ago. I wouldn’t put anything past him.”

“Hotheads run in their dumbass family, amor.” He says. “Quien hizo esto pagará. You don’t fuck with a Martinez and get away with it!”

“Woah, how are you going to tell Diamond about this?” Valentina asked after Deontae explained what happened.

“I’m not going to tell her. She already has enough on her plate.” Deontae says.

“Well, how do you feel about everything?”

“I mean, I’m not happy that my sister is having a baby this young and out of wedlock, but our family is so fucked up and all we have is each other. I gotta be there for her, no matter what.” He says as he lays his head on her chest. She ran her fingers through his hair as she listened to him talk. “I don’t know what my parents want, and I don’t really care to get to know them anymore. Any chance of having any type of relationship with them is off the table for now.”

“It’s weird how they’re only focused on you and not Diamond.” Valentina says.

“A part of me wants to know everything, but another part of me already knows.”

“What do you mean?” She asked. “Did they hint at what they wanted from you?”

“No, but it can’t be good.” He says as he sits up. “The look in their eyes, it was…I don’t know.” He tries to brush it off and get the image out of his mind. “And there’s no way they’re the same age.”

“What?” Valentina yells, he quickly covers her mouth. “Sorry.” She apologizes as he moves his hand.

“What’s his name? Maybe we can do some research on him.” Valentina says as she gets off the bed and grabs her laptop.

“She called him Sebastián, but I don’t know his last name.”

“Okay, let’s try her name instead.” She says as she types in her name. “This is her, right?” She asked as she pointed to a picture of Sonya in high school.

“Yeah, that’s her.” He says as he looks at her picture. “She went to Marriotts Ridge?” He never knew that he was going to the same high school as his mother.

“She must have been pregnant with you in this picture.” Valentina said as she clicked on the picture of Sonya and her friends with their hands on her stomach.

“Wait, scroll back up!” He says to Valentina when he saw a picture of his father. “That’s him! That’s my father!”

“What?” Valentina says. “It says his name is Sebastián José Henri Wilson. He was a math teacher at Marriotts Ridge High School for four years. He stopped teaching the same year your mother ran away.”

Deontae sat down on the bed, trying to take everything in. His life has been fucked up from the start. He was mad that he didn’t know the truth before and mad that found out now.

“Not tryna be racist but, isn’t it weird that a Puerto Rico’s last name is Wilson?” He tries to joke, to convince himself that this wasn’t his life.

“Deontae, you don’t have to hide your pain behind jokes.” She says as she looks him in his eyes. “Tell me how you really feel.”

“Why would they even bring me and Diamond into this world? Did they think we’d never find out the truth?” He angrily asked. “Now I have to live the rest of my life knowing my father is pedophile and my mother…” He paused, he didn’t even know how to describe her.

“I’m sorry, I don’t even know why I suggested this.” She apologizes as she closed the tab. He placed his hand on hers. “We can stop if you want to.”

“It’s not your fault, Val.” He says before kissing her hand. “It’s getting late, let’s just go to sleep. We have to pick your cousin up from the airport in the morning.”

“Okay.” Valentina says as she puts her laptop away. She wanted to talk to him and see where his head was at, but she saw that he was hurt and he was trying to be strong. She didn’t say anything and tried to avoid eye contact with him as she put her hair in a ponytail. She knew he’d be able to tell something wasn’t sitting right with her just by looking into her eyes, the same way she could with him.

“How are your parents going to feel when we tell them about us?” He asked, for his own sanity he needed to talk about anything other than his parents. Being alone with your thoughts can sometimes turn deadly.

“Well,” she says as she lays down next to him. “My mom will be very excited, she’s been rooting for us since the beginning of time.” She yawns before laying her head on his chest. “Even though my father loves you, I’m still his baby girl.”

“They’re probably gonna think we been fucking this whole time.” He says which made her laugh.

“Go to sleep.” She says while playfully hitting his chest. He climbs on top of her and caresses her cheek.

“Let me put you to sleep first.” He says before leaning down and kissing her. She wraps her arms around his neck as he slipped his tongue in her mouth.

“I’m starting to think you can’t get enough of me.” Valentina whispers into his ear as he kisses her neck. He pulls away and looks down at her.

“Nah, I’m just tryna bust a nut.” He jokes, which made her punch him in the chest. “I’m just playing, baby.”

“Fuck you!”

“That’s what I’m trying to do.” He says, she was about to punch him again but he grabbed her hand. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.” He apologizes in a baby voice as he leaves kisses all over her face.

“Keep playing, you gon’ play yourself right out of this pussy!” She said which made him gasp.

“I just got it!” He pretended to whine. “How you gon’ take it away that fast?”

“Just be happy that you’re cute and all my batteries died.” She says before kissing him.

“Where the fuck is she?!” Miya yelled as she paced back and forth. She and Angelo have been waiting for Tracy to show for hours. “If that bitch doesn’t show up we’ll just have to move in on Terrance.”

“Relax, Miya. You know she has a routine that she has to keep up.” Angelo says as he sits down on the couch.

“Now’s not the time for jokes, motherfucka!” Miya yells at him. “This is deeper than Diamond now. This is my life that she’s playing with.”

“¿Por qué no puedes follarte a otra chica?” Angelo says while shaking his head. “Just find somebody else.”

“Why don’t you do the same?” Miya asked him. “Angelo, you already know what I’m capable of! I don’t think it’s a good idea to get on my bad side, Ricky Ricardo.”

“What you’re capable of?” Angelo scoffs. “You can’t do shit on your own! That’s why you had to involve Miguel and Tracy. When Miguel failed you, you turned to me. I’m the one that makes shit happen, so pipe down.”

“Bitch, I own all of you!” Miya yells at him. “I’ve had to change my plans multiple times because of Tracy and Miguel, and I be damned if I let you disrespect me after everything I’ve been through.” She calmed down once she heard a car pulling up. “Wait in the hallway until I signal you to come back down.”

Just as Angelo made it upstairs and out of view, Tracy finally walks through the door. She kicked her heels off and tossed her jacket on the couch.

“Where the hell have you been?” Miya asked as she walks over to her. Tracy sighs as she takes her earrings off. “Oh, bitch you wanna fight?”

“No, Miya back the hell up!” She says as she pushes her. “I was with Terrance.”

“I called him and he said he hasn’t seen you all day. Lie again, hoe!”

“I thought we’ve already established that he’s a liar.” She says as she places her hand on her forehead. “Miya, I’m tired. I’m going to sleep.”

“Miguel is out on bail and we need to go over our story again, okay?”

“Our story?” Tracy scoffs. “Don’t you mean your plan that’s falling apart? It’s not my fault that you’re in love with Miguel’s girlfriend, and you’re mad because she doesn’t want you! Newsflash, every girl isn’t a lesbian and she damn sure wouldn’t be one for you, you psycho bitch!”

Miya slaps Tracy so hard that she falls to the ground. “Don’t let me hear her name come out of your hoe ass mouth ever again!” She yells as she repeatedly kicked her. “If it wasn’t for you and your dumbass brother not knowing how to follow directions, she wouldn’t have gotten hurt at all.” She says before pulling Tracy in closer by her shirt. “Now you’re gonna help me fix this.” She noticed there was something hooked onto her bra. “What the fuck?!” Before she could fully process what was happening, the police had already kicked the door in.

~ Sneak Peek ~

She’s All That focuses on the lives of five young black women.

{Chapter One}

“So, where do you work?” Nova’s date, William asked her. Like her father, he was rich and white. That’s exactly how Nova likes them!

Her motto is: If you can’t throw cash, don’t expect no ass!

Nova laughs before saying, “You’re joking, right?” He had a confused look on his face. That’s when she realized he was serious. “Wow! Okay, um, you’re really not joking.”

“No, why would I be joking? You do work, don’t you?” He asked before cutting into his steak. “What? Is it Top Secret or something?” He jokes.

“It’s your job to take care of me.” She says causing him to start choking. “Are you alright?” She asked as he took a sip of champagne.

“Uh, yes, I’m fine. I just wasn’t expecting that answer.” Williams says while unloosing his tie. He’s never met a woman as straight forward as Nova. Yes, he’s met women who only wanted him for his money but, they tried their best to hide their true intentions from him.

“I’m a woman that needs to be kept, William. My father treats me like a princess so I expect nothing less than that.” She answered. “You didn’t think I’d give this ass up for free, did you?” She chuckles.

He clears hIs throat. “Not exactly.” He answers her. “It’s not like I was expecting it on the first date, or anything. Unless, that’s what you wanted.”

She chuckles at his response. “You won’t be getting anything from me, for free. So, if you have problem,” she stands up, “then you can watch me walk out of here.”

“Nova, that’s not what I meant. I really would like to get to know you.” He said as he stood up. He tried to grab her hands but she pushed him away. “What did I do? What’s wrong?”

“William, I don’t want to hear those expensive ass words come out of your cheap ass mouth.” She says while grabbing her purse. “And please stare at my ass while I walk out.”
