Sergio Ramos’ record in front of goal grew even more impressive on Sunday evening, scoring two first half goals to first equal and then break Daniel Passarella’s record with Argentina as international football’s most prolific defender.
His early penalty against Ukraine drew him level with the Argentine on 22 goals before going on to get his 23rd.
Most impressive is that Ramos’ 23 for La Roja have come in just 70 appearances, compared to the 172 caps that Passarella took to reach 22.
His record from the penalty spot also got even better as he converted his seventh in a row and his eighth of 10 taken for his country in all.
Now level with Alfredo Di Stefano for Spain goals, next on Ramos’ list of records is Emilio Butragueno’s total of 26 goals for the country.
