The party executives in the ward alleged that the lawmaker worked to jeopardise the interest of the party in the just concluded governorship election.

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has ordered all schools in the state to resume full academic activities by Monday, October 19, 2020.

He further directed that all schools must abide by the COVID-19 preventive guidelines to ensure the safety of members of staff and students.

Chairman of the Inter-ministerial Committee on Coronavirus (COVID-19), Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, who is also the Vice-Chancellor, University of Medical Sciences, disclosed this, yesterday.

Fatusi said that the governor had instructed the committee to conduct periodic monitoring visits to schools and that any school found not to be complying with the COVID-19 guidelines should be shut.

Besides, the governor has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the authorities of the Nigeria Police, families, and well-wishers of victims of the unfortunate car crash in Akure on Tuesday.

In a statement signed and made available to journalists in Akure, yesterday, by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, the governor said: “As a government, our hearts are with the authorities of the Nigeria Police as well as the immediate families of the departed. This is a shared moment and unfortunately so.”

In another development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has expelled the House of Assemblymember representing Ilaje Constituency II, Semilore Tomomewo.

The expulsion was contained in a letter to the state and national leadership of the party, made available to journalists in Akure yesterday, by Mr. Olamigoke Ajimuda and Taid Omosule, the ward chairman and secretary respectively.

MEANWHILE, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the APC not to rejoice yet in the victory of Akeredolu.

The state’s PDP Acting Director, Media, and Publicity, Leye Igbabo, who cautioned the governor to refrain from attacking and harassing the people, said: “It is not yet Uhuru for him and certainly not the time to seek vengeance if he ever needs to do so at all.

“Our party is still studying the election results and how the entire process was largely compromised, and would soon come out with the next line of action aimed at addressing and redressing the infractions.

“Honestly, we expect the governor to have risen above this pettiness if he is desirous of making any progress in the governance of Ondo State.

“In the interim, we do hope that the governor would be magnanimous, at least for the little time the victory would last, rather than dissipating energy on sieving out those who voted and those who did not vote for him.

“We also advise him to divest himself for once of this type of pettiness and work on how Ondo State can regain her glory that had been lost.”

OndoDecide’20: Ajayi, Akeredolu, Jegede, Others sign peace pact. [Nigeria]

Advertisements

Candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rotimi Akeredolu; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede; the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Agboola Ajayi, and others, have signed a peace pact ahead of the Ondo State Governorship election slated for Saturday.

They signed the pact on Tuesday in the state capital, Akure, pledging to shun violence during the election and avoid actions that may undermine the peace accord.

The event, facilitated by the National Peace Committee (NPC), had the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmoud Yakubu; and the Inspector-General Of Police, Mohammed Adamu, who was represented by the DIG Of Police, Research and Planning, Oyebade Adeleye, in attendance.

Others in attendance included the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Kukah, Executive Director, YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo and traditional rulers from the state.

With the election drawing close, there have been claims and counterclaims about attacks from the two leading contestants, the candidates of the APC and the PDP.

In the weeks leading up to the election, the convoy of the PDP candidate, Jegede has been attacked severally – a situation which he credited to ‘hoodlums’ who according to him, escort the governor.

“Why should hoodlums be following a governor?,” Jegede asked, in an interview last Wednesday, as he reiterated that it can only be because they are threatened by him.

The APC, on the other hand, has accused the PDP of attacking its party properties in Owo the hometown of incumbent Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Advertisements

They also accused some supporters of the opposition party of shooting at passers-by and damaging their vehicles, shops and other building in an attack.

While both parties have denied responsibility of the attacks, they have now signed the pact, agreeing to a violence-free exercise.

Jegede had contested in 2016 under the PDP and is hoping to secure a victory this time.

Also looking to secure a second term, Akeredolu on Tuesday, however, gave an assurance that the election will be peaceful, even as he urged INEC to ensure that the exercise is free, fair and credible.

OndoDecide’20: APC Govs, leaders on their heels as Akeredolu flag off re-election campaign. [Nigeria]

Governors of the All Progressive Congress (APC) stormed Akure, the Ondo state capital on Saturday as Rotimi Akeredolu kicked off his re-election campaign ahead of the November poll.

Some of the Governors present in Akure were Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state, and Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state.

However, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was expected to flag-off the campaign was absent.

Also absent was the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The party’s flag was presented to Akeredolu by acting National Chairman and Yobe state Governor, Mai Mala Buni.

“Ondo State is receiving first-class governance,” Sanwo-Olu said during his speech. “Ondo state is receiving a progressive man that has brought about real development.”

Akeredolu has “confirmed all promises,” Fayemi said as he urged the crowd at the campaign event to return the Governor for a second term. “Four more years of APC is four more years of development.”

Speaking in Yoruba, Akeredolu warned his supporters that “there is work to do” in order to prevent contesting parties from rigging the election.

Also present at the event was the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.

“The turnout here is an indication that he is done well for the people of Ondo state,” the Minister said, “and that there is a very great likelihood that he will be re-elected. And I believe that when he is re-elected, he will perform better than what he has done now, despite the limited resources he has.”

APC National Leader, Bola Tinubu was with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure, the Ondo State capital on September 5, 2020, before the campaign kickoff event took place.

‘The masses are with us’
Meanwhile, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party postponed the flag-off of its campaign for candidate Eyitayo Jegede till September 12; it was originally scheduled for today.

Instead, the PDP campaign team met in Ibadan to strengthen strategy for the November 10 election.

Jegede, after the meeting, said the APC stood no chance.

Advertisements

“The people of Ondo state have now seen the negative effects of APC administration,” he said.

“If they are sure of their position, then they should not have threatened violence, they shouldn’t have said they are relying on federal might, which is what they have been saying all along.

“The masses are with us and they should not impose any violence on the state; let’s have a free and fair election, any day, any time APC will go down.”

The National Organising and Mobilising Secretary of the PDP, Sen. Austin Akobundu, also said the PDP will not take anything for granted in its quest to reclaim Ondo state.

States funding community police, not possible – Akeredolu kicks. [Ondo]

Advertisements

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu has kicked against the idea of states funding community policing in the country.

Speaking during an interview with Media tv (known to Noble Reporters Media) on Wednesday, Akeredolu said the idea would not work.

He disclosed that his colleagues under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum will table the matter before President Muhammadu Buhari for his intervention.

Advertisements

“The burden of states will keep increasing. We will be the ones that will fund community police. Where is the money going to come from?

“Except we devolve more money to the states, how will the states fund community police? I don’t think it is going to work,” he said.

“I am sure that they are taking this thing too far (that) governors will have to pay. We have argued this. They started by saying it will be voluntary, they are not going to pay.

A file photo of Ondo State Governor, Olurotimi Akeredolu.

“They now shift the burden on the state governors again. Are you increasing their allocation? Which state governor will accept that?

“I don’t know if other states will pay but we will not pay. Let us be fair to ourselves, we are running a federal system. We will sit down and discuss this because we have a President that has a listening ear.”

Reacting to his relationship with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, the governor said it is cordial.

He however maintained that the issue between him the Deputy Governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi is out of ambition, stressing that Ajayi decided to exit the ruling APC to “where he belongs.”

Governor Akeredolu is optimistic about victory in the October 10 governorship election in the state.

His remarks come two weeks after he inaugurated the pioneer officers of Ondo State Security network Agency Amotekun Corps.

While inaugurating the corps in Akure, the state capital expressed delight with the performance of the pioneer Amotekun Corps officers who just completed their training.

He urged them to put into good use all they were taught during training to ensure the security of life and property in the state.

While soliciting for more funding from the Federal Government to equip the police, governor Akeredolu said that the Amotekun Corps is designed to support the existing security framework in the state.

Ondo gov, Akeredolu defends inauguration of Amotekun corps

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, says the Nigeria Police Force is being overstretched as the nation confronts the numerous security challenges.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Governor Akeredolu called for the decentralising of the police.

“There are a lot of problems we have with our security architecture in this country. It is important for us to understand the way everybody’s mind is watching.

“We cannot run away from it. What we have said and what we know is that the police is overstretched,” he said.

According to him, the policing system in the United States, Britain and other countries of the world is decentralised.

He, therefore, called for the creation of state police; calling on the National Assembly to create the right framework for the nation’s policing structure.

The governor, who noted that policing involved carrying the local along, stressed that a situation whereby key decisions are taken from Abuja does not tackle the several security challenges.

When asked for an approach to tackling the threats in the country, he said “the time has come. We cannot continue in the manner at which we are doing and expect to have effective policing of lives and properties.

“You have said I am the Chief Security Officer. But Chief Security Officer that I am subjected to what the Inspector General of Police will direct?” he asked.

OndoDecide’20: Akeredolu names Aiyedatiwa as running mate

Advertisements

The Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), has named Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as his running mate for the October 10 governorship election in the state.

The Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Olabode Richard Olatunde disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

According to Akeredolu, the leaders of the party had made wide consultations to choose a suitable and qualified candidate as the running mate in the forthcoming gubernatorial election.

In arriving at the choice of Aiyedatiwa, the governor said some important factors assisted the leaders of the party, including the decision to sever ties with mediocrity and treachery.

Advertisements

While noting that the experiences of the immediate past must guide his decision, Akeredolu said a candidate with verifiable credentials and pedigree had been chosen to complete the last part of the gubernatorial race.

Identifying loyalty and honesty as the twin virtues needed to serve at the moment, the governor said the people expect a fresh and dignifying breather from the choking rot of the immediate past.

“The general public has been treated to a cocktail of lies by those who recently disengaged from our administration, as well as those who were asked to step aside to allow those who displayed genuine passion to serve come on board,” the governor said.

“Their hirelings are busy spreading falsehood and maligning personalities on social media.

You must have heard or read about the comedy of errors enacted by some erstwhile principal officers of this administration.

“Those who allege exclusion from governance have been unable to tell the people, in specific terms, how that happened. No political appointee is owed any salaries and allowances.

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (File Photo)

Only those who came into office believing that political appointments would aid primitive acquisition of wealth have been disappointed.

For us, it is good riddance to bad rubbish.”

He congratulated the new commissioner for Natural Resources, Hon. Idowu Otetubi and the Special Adviser on Entrepreneurship Development, while asking them to remain committed and steadfast to the service of the people.

Despite threats by workers in Ondo State to embark on a strike action, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has said that the reasons given by the workers for their planned act were not new to his government.

The workers had on Friday threatened to embark on strike action over the failure of the state government to pay some of their emoluments and accumulated salary arrears.

But Akeredolu said the issues and demands raised by the agitated workers in their letter were not peculiar to Ondo State.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Akeredolu, Commissioner for Information in the state, Donald Ojogo, said, “It is on record that as at today Ondo State ranks among those with a higher level of worker-friendliness in Nigeria.

The pastor who spoke while addressing his members also pointed out that Akeredolu can only win the coming All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election through the back door.

He said indirect primary was the only form of election that could make Akeredolu get the ticket of the All Progressives Congress.

The cleric said the people of Ondo State had made up their minds to vote out the administration of Akeredolu.

A statement he signed and sent to Media reads: “As you all know, we have been experiencing bad governance in Ondo State since Governor Akeredolu and his family took over.

Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu

“We have never experienced this kind of senseless and selfish government before. No accountability, no sincerity. What kind of government is this?

“They are governing Ondo State the way president Buhari is ruling Nigeria. Let me tell you that governor Akeredolu can only get the ticket of the party through the back door.

“He can only win the ticket of his political party through indirect primary election. If he rigs himself in through the indirect primary, the people of Ondo State will vote him out through the governorship election.

“The primary election is meant for politicians or party loyalists while the citizens of the state determine who wins the governorship election.

“APC should forget Ondo State if Akeredolu secures the ticket of the party. Ondo people cannot continue to serve Governor Akeredolu, his children, wife and in-laws.”

Following the running battle between the embattled Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi and his boss, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, all might have been concluded for the impeachment of Ajayi.

NRM gathered that the impeachment proceedings against Ajayi might commence on Monday at the hallowed chamber of the Ondo State House of Assembly.

This was sequel to the sudden recall of the 26 lawmakers who had been on recess to immediately resume legislative duties at the Assembly.

The Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Bode Adeyelu had in a short message sent to the legislators directed them to ensure compliance with the directive given by the Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun.

The source added that it is likely that the Assembly might initiate impeachment proceedings against Ajayi.

Recall with Noble Reporters Media that two weeks ago, Ajayi defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to run for the governorship ticket of the party even as he insisted that he will not resign his position as deputy governor.

But Akeredolu over the weekend made a formal declaration foreclosing the consideration of handing over governance to Ajayi following the COVID-19 positive status of Akeredolu with the deputy governor giving his boss 21 days ultimatum to handover to him as acting governor.

Ajayi had accused his boss of doling out N10 million to entice each of the lawmakers in a bid to meet the requirement of two-third majority, that is about 18 out of the 26 lawmakers in the state in order for the impeachment to scale through.
