Revenge: Donald Trump fires EU Ambassador, Others

In a move that has been dubbed the White House ‘Friday Night Massacre’ by political commentators, US President Donald Trump has sacked EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland, National Security council member Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman and Vindman’s twin brother Yevgeny Vindman, a National Security Council attorney for their involvements during the impeachment inquiry, just days after he was acquitted by the US Senate on charges of Abuse of office and Obstruction of congress.

Trump fires EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland, Alexander Vindman & his twin brother as revenge for testifying against him during impeachment inquiry

War hero Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman and his twin Yevgeny Vindman were sacked and escorted from the White House on Friday while Sondland, who is Ambassador to the EU, released a statement Friday night saying he has been removed from his job ‘effective’ immediately’

All three men played major roles in the House of Reps impeachment inquiry against Trump and it is expected that Senator Mitt Romney will be Trump’s next target after he was the only Republican who voted to remove the Commander-in-Chief from office during a Senate vote on Wednesday.

Vindman’s attorney, David Pressman, released a statement about his client’s firing.

‘Today, Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman was escorted out of the White House where he has dutifully served his country and his President’.

‘He does so having spoken publicly once, and only pursuant to a subpoena from the United States Congress.’ ‘There is no question in the mind of any American why this man’s job is over, why this country now has one less soldier serving it at the White House,’

“LTC Vindman was asked to leave for telling the truth. His honour, his commitment to right, frightened the powerful.

“The truth has cost LTC Alexander Vindman his job, his career, and his privacy.

“The most powerful man in the world – buoyed by the silent, the pliable, and the complicit – has decided to exact revenge.”

Sondland also confirmed that he is being recalled from his post in a statement he released on Friday February 7. His statement read;

”I was advised today that the president intends to recall me effective immediately’.
‘I am grateful to President Trump for having given me the opportunity to serve, to Secretary Pompeo for his consistent support, and to the exceptional and dedicated professionals at the U.S. Mission to the European Union.

‘I am proud of our accomplishments. Our work here has been the highlight of my career.’

Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr tweeted about the sack on Friday night saying, ‘Allow me a moment to thank—and this may be a bit of a surprise—Adam Schiff. Were it not for his crack investigation skills, @realDonaldTrump might have had a tougher time unearthing who all needed to be fired. Thanks, Adam #FullOfSchiff’.

Vindman who was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in Iraq after being wounded in an IED attack and still carries shrapnel from the attack in his body, was on the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and testifying in November during the impeachment inquiry said;

‘I was concerned by the call. I did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen, and I was worried about the implications for the U.S. Government’s support of Ukraine. I realized that if Ukraine pursued an investigation into the Bidens and Burisma, it would likely be interpreted as a partisan play which would undoubtedly result in Ukraine losing the bipartisan support it has thus far maintained. This would all undermine U.S. national security,’ he told House investigators.

Earlier on Friday, Trump admitted he was not happy with Vindman while speaking to reporters.

‘I’m not happy with him. Am I supposed to be happy with him? I’m not,’

25 ambassador discharged of duty.

…heads of missions sacked.

The Federal Government has confirmed the disengagement of 25 ambassadors and heads of missions, just after a notice was issued to the affected diplomats.

While the affected diplomats complained that the December 31 notice issued to them was “too sudden”, it was gathered that the Minister of Foreign Affairs Geoffrey Onyeama had written to them in November, directing that they return to Nigeria on or before December 31.

As some of the envoys pleaded for two to three months extension in order to complete some diplomatic formalities before their disengagement, they were reminded of the tenure extension given to them by President Buhari in 2018.

Ferdinand Nwonye, a spokesperson of the foreign affairs ministry who confirmed the disengagement of the envoys on Tuesday December 31, said in a previous statement that the call for an extension by the ambassadors and heads of missions was selfish.

He said;

“They should have been disengaged by now. When officers, including ambassadors are recalled, they have to leave. They can decide from there to go elsewhere. But they should surely disengage from the mission.

“They cannot remain. There is even another telegram that instructed that the most senior foreign service officer should take over from them.”

U.S president criticized the imprisonment of a gay couple in Zambia.

The US ambassador to Zambia, Daniel Foote has been recalled following a diplomatic row that ensued after he criticised the imprisonment of a gay couple.

Foote who said he was “horrified” that the men were handed a 15-year jail sentence after being caught having sex in 2017, was declared persona non grata and also accused of trying to dictate policy by President Edgar Lungu.

Home Affairs Minister, Stephen Kampyongo told Hot FM radio;

“The dos and don’ts for those who represent nations in other nations are very clear. So if one crosses the line, it’s not about bilateral relations between the two countries. They (Washington) listened to the complaint”

An embassy source told Reuters that Washington decided to recall its ambassador because it was difficult for him to work in Zambia if his hosts did not want him.

Nigeria’s reputation damaged internationally due to sowore’s rearrest – Ex U.S Ambassador

…What is different this time is the parallelism

John Campbell, a former United States Ambassador to Nigeria has accused the Buhari-led administration of tainting Nigeria’s international reputation with the rearrest of Omoyele Sowore in his statement titled: “Buhari’s Dictatorial Past and the Rule of Law Today in Nigeria”

The diplomat also spoke about the danger ahead of the press following Punch Newspaper’s editorial on prefixing President Buhari’s title with his rank as a military dictator and referring to his administration as a “regime” as a symbolic demonstration of their protest against the President’s alleged autocracy and military-style repression.

The statement released by Campbell who served as U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria from May 12, 2004, to July 19, 2007, was published on the website of the Council on Foreign Relations and it reads in part;

“The state security service assault on a courtroom and the re-arrest of Sowore has already damaged the country’s international reputation.

“Buhari is not surprising, but it is worth noting that Zakzaky and Dasuki are both northern Muslims. What is different this time is the parallelism between military rule and Buhari’s civilian administration.

“Nigeria’s foreign friends will be hoping that the government takes no move to limit Punch’s freedom of expression. The SSS assault on a court room and the re-arrest of Sowore has already damaged the country’s international reputation.

“The Sowore re-arrest is consolidating opposition to the president by civil society, the press, international opinion and now religious leaders. It is to be hoped that the Buhari administration is looking actively for a way to defuse the Sowore issue, perhaps by allowing him to return to the United States.”
