EPL Giant, Man Utd signs Cavani, Telles on last day

Advertisements

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Edinson Cavani, Uruguay striker, on a free transfer on deadline day.

The former Napoli striker had been without a club since the expiration of his contract at Paris Saint Germain (PSG) in June.

The Uruguay international has signed a one-year deal at Old Trafford and United have the option to extend his stay for a further season.

“Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of striker Edinson Cavani. The Uruguay international joins on a one-year contract with the option to extend for a further year,” the club said in a statement on Monday night.

Cavani has won six Ligue 1 titles with PSG and lifted the Copa America with his country back in 2011.

“Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here. I’ve worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club,” he said.

“I have played in front of some of the most passionate supporters in football during my career and I know that it will be the same in Manchester. I cannot wait to experience the Old Trafford atmosphere, when it is safe for the fans to return.

“I look forward to continuing to write my little story inside the book of football and I know that’s why my focus has to remain the same as always – work, work, work. I have had a conversation with the manager and this has increased my desire to wear this beautiful shirt.”

Cavani is Manchester United’s third signing on transfer deadline day following the capture of Alex Telles, a left-back from FC Porto for £15 million, and 18-year-old Amad Traore for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old Brazilian left back has signed a contract until June 2024, with the option of a further year.

“To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour,” said Telles.

“You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here.

“I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United. The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt.”

Traore, one of the most promising young attackers in world football, is expected to link up with his new club in January.

Juventus Contact Cavani on potential move

Advertisements

Juventus have made contact with prolific free agent Edinson Cavani as their search for a new striker this summer takes another twist, according to reports.

The Turin giants also targeted Barcelona frontman Luis Suarez and Roma ace Edin Dzeko but have struggled to haul either deal over the line.

Sky Sports Italia claim that Juventus may now move for former Paris Saint-Germain star Cavani, who allowed his contract in the French capital to expire at the end of the campaign.

After the surprising arrival of Andrea Pirlo as Juventus’ new head coach, the club have tried desperately to strengthen their frontline before the new Serie A campaign begins.

A swoop for Cavani may prove a shrewd, but ultimately short-term, addition. He had been close to moving to Benfica, but the deal reportedly collapsed due to the experienced hitman’s wage demands.

Advertisements

It has been suggested that the Uruguay international wanted a three-year deal worth a hefty £8.8million per season.

But Juventus have not been deterred in their bid to add some more experience to their ranks. Cavani, just like Suarez, is also 33 years of age and boasted a formidable scoring record in Ligue 1.

The same report highlights that while Suarez would need to negotiate his exit from Barcelona and get an EU passport to not occupy a slot in Juventus’ squad, Cavani already holds an Italian passport.

Suarez is understood to have agreed to join Juventus and is gradually nearing the exit door. He must still finalise his payoff though, and will be able to move to Turin as either a free agent or for a small nominal transfer fee.

In the event that any move for Suarez falls through, then Cavani may become the back-up option. Juventus may yet be left frustrated again, however.

Reports in Brazil have touted Cavani to move to Gremio – meaning the Italian outfit may still be active in the market as it edges closer to the deadline.

Advertisements

It is also believed that Dzeko is not convinced by the prospect of leaving Roma over the coming weeks, with both Juventus and Inter Milan said to be interested.

Cavani may still reject Juventus’ advances due to his connection with league rivals Napoli.

He netted 104 goals in 138 matches during his spell in Naples between 2010 and 2013, and also helped the club lift the Coppa Italia during his first season.

This loyalty and affection for his former club may scupper any move to the Allianz Stadium.

Cavani heads to Real Madrid

Advertisements

Real Madrid are interested in signing free agent Edinson Cavani this summer following his departure from the French capital.

The Uruguayan forward is a free agent after letting his contract at Paris Saint-Germain run down and failing to secure a proposed move to Portuguese club Benfica due to wage demands.

Real Madrid will, however, consider signing the 33-year-old if they are able to sell out of favour Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz this summer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Advertisements

The two strikers have failed to impress under manager Zinedine Zidane and could be offloaded to make way for Cavani.

Cavani is said to have agreed personal terms with the Spanish giants back in January, however, a deal never materialised as PSG demanded a €30m transfer fee, which Madrid were unwilling to pay.

Marca have reported that the striker has been ‘enthusiastic’ about moving to the Spanish capital.

Madrid are not the only side vying for Cavani’s signature after he scored 200 goals in 301 games for Ligue 1 champions PSG and 104 goals in 138 matches for Napoli.

Leeds are among those interested, having previously drawn up an ambitious plan to bring him to Elland Road following promotion to the Premier League.

PSG strongly targets Griezmann as Cavani’s replacement

Advertisements

PSG could have serious problems if they want Antoine Griezmann this summer. He has played poorly and Barca and not had as much game time as he would have liked.

Griezmann is a target with Edinson Cavani leaving the French club.

French media says PSG have spoken to him to find out his opinion and current situation.

Advertisements

However it’s not a simple case. PSG will be one of the first clubs to shut their transfer window this summer. Their window will shut on July 7. The rest of the big leagues do not close shop until October.

In this sense, if they want Griezmann it will have to be an express transfer – super fast. They will also have to hold off other clubs going for players, eg, Neymar, after the window shuts in France but not across Europe.

PSG confirms Cavani and Thiago Silva’s departure

Paris Saint-Germain director Leonardo confirms ‘Edinson Cavani and Thiago Silva will be leaving’ at the end of the season as free agents.

Their contracts are due to expire and they have been linked with numerous clubs, including Cavani to Inter and Atletico Madrid, with Thiago Silva potentially returning to Milan.

“It’s true, we are reaching the end of the road with them,” Leonardo told Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

“The idea is to keep them until the end of August so that they can play in the Champions League.”

Cavani is 33 years old and had moved to PSG from Napoli for €64.5m in the summer of 2013.

As for Thiago Silva, the 35-year-old centre-back joined the Parisians from Milan for €42m alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2012.

‘Risky Step’ Letting Cavani Leave PSG

Advertisements

Nicolas Anelka believes Paris Saint-Germain allowing Edinson Cavani to join another club next season would be a “very big mistake”.

Advertisements

After moving to Paris in 2013 from Napoli, the 33-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel with his contract due to expire at season’s end.

PSG’s recent purchase of Mauro Icardi would seem to suggest Cavani, who has been linked with interest from Inter and Atletico Madrid, won’t be staying in Paris.

Cavani’s departure could however come back to haunt PSG, according to Anelka, who himself began his career at the club.

Advertisements

“To let Cavani go would be a very big mistake,” Anelka said during a fan interview on Instagram. “He remains a No.9 as there is no more. He has a lot of trash [in his game], but he makes crazy plays and he scores. He will serve you no matter what.”In Paris, you need competition. He is a super striker that you risk giving to a competitor because he will necessarily go to another big club. And when he plays against PSG, he will score for sure. And this is where they will have great regrets.”

Tuchel’s side were handed the Ligue 1 title this season after the campaign was called off due to the coronavirus.

Advertisements

While PSG are regularly succeeding domestically, continental success continues to allude them, with Anelka suggesting their lack of serious competition in Ligue 1 hasn’t helped. “PSG today is a great team. With the players they have, they are good enough to win the Champions League. They will end up doing it,” Anelka added.

“The only problem is the weak competition that exists in Ligue 1. To be champion of France is good, but to progress on a European scale, they need difficult matches regularly.

Advertisements

“I hope that Marseille will soon be bought by a wealthy Gulf businessman so that they have real adversity in Ligue 1.”

Speaking about his future last month, Cavani stressed he’s hoping to dictate the final stages of his playing career and not the other way around.

“My career will last for maybe several years still, here or elsewhere, I don’t know,” Cavani said in May.

Advertisements

“I’ve spoken about it a lot with my entourage. I’ve always said that I would like to quit football rather than football quitting on me.

“I’d really like to finish having given everything. To get to that point where I’d say, ‘Guys, this is the point where I have to go.’ I don’t want life to lead me to play when I wouldn’t be capable of giving my best. The day will come where it will be obvious that the time’s come to move on to something else.”

Cavani Links with United despite Atletico,Inter and Newcastle’s interest

Cavani’s future continues to be up in the air, and that means he’ll continue to be linked with a move to Manchester United.

Advertisements

The 33 year old’s contract at PSG expires at the end of June and he’s of interest to several clubs. Sunday’s edition of L’Equipe reports Inter Milan, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid are in the picture as potential destinations.

Cavani will not ‘rule out’ moving to Old Trafford, and the same goes for other options on the table. The French newspaper states Manchester United have been interested since January, which makes some sense given their search for a striker at the time.

PSG priced Cavani out of a move in the winter market, with it being reported at the time they asked Atletico Madrid for as much as €30m to sign the Uruguayan. The failure of that transfer reportedly angered Cavani, and it may well be that he’d prefer Atletico should they make another attempt this summer.

Advertisements

Manchester United need to decide what to do regarding Odion Ighalo, and whether they even need a new striker given Marcus Rashford will be fit for the start of next season.

If they do want to sign a short term option, and if Cavani would accept a short contract, then he could be a solution.

Inter focuses on Cavani as Mertens chooses Napoli stay

Inter are now concentrating their efforts on Edinson Cavani after Dries Mertens opted to stay at Napoli.

Advertisements

Cavani is also available on a free transfer but, unlike Mertens, Paris Saint-Germain have not opened talks to renew the striker’s contract.

However, given his different profile to the Belgian, sources explains he would form part of a new-look Nerazzurri attack.

That is because Lautaro Martinez could join Barcelona, Alexis Sanchez will return to Manchester United and Sebastiano Esposito is set to be loaned out.

The 33-year-old, for his part, has been replaced in PSG’s front line by Mauro Icardi this season, and the Inter loanee looks like making his stay permanent.

Advertisements

For a deal to happen, Il Corriere warns Inter must see off competition from Atletico Madrid.

It is thought Atletico could offer him closer to his current €18m salary, but the Beneamata are almost certain to be able to offer Champions League football.

Players Ibrahimovic hates, Edison Cavani Tops list

Advertisements

Former LA Galaxy player Michael Ciani has revealed some of the insights he was given in a private conversation with Swedish star Ibrahimovic.

Advertisements

It is no secret that Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani did not hit it off as best buddies when they linked up at Paris Saint-Germain. But now stories about their relationship have been revealed by a former teammate which confirm the opinion that the Swede had of the Uruguayan.

Zlatan’s hate for Cavani
~Michael Ciani, who shared the changing room with Zlatan at LA Galaxy, told RMC Sport about some of the striker’s confessions.

“If you are close with Cavani, Ibra doesn’t like it. Either you are with Ibra or against him.

“He told me that everything was fine with Laurent Blanc at PSG. The only person he did not get along with was Cavani. He told me that he had only hated three or four teammates in his entire career… and one of them was Cavani.”

Recently, a new LA Galaxy full back, Emiliano Insúa, revealed that he was made well aware of his new team mates’ opinions of Zlatan Ibrahimovic upon his arrival.

Atletico Madrid ‘offer Edinson Cavani a two-year contract worth £10m per season’

Advertisements

Atletico Madrid are looking to steal a march on Edinson Cavani and will offer him a two-year deal worth £10million per season, reports in Spain claim.

Advertisements

The Uruguayan’s contract at PSG is up this summer and he is being heavily linked with a move away from Paris, with Atletico the most likely destination.

And now Mundo Deportivo have reported that manager Diego Simeone sees Cavani as the perfect fit to lead the line for his team next season, with the Madrid outfit offering the 33-year-old a two-year deal.

It was believed that Cavani would move on in January to give PSG an opportunity to cash in on a player who has netted 200 goals in 300 games since arriving in the French capital.

Advertisements

But despite being linked with a move to the Premier League and LaLiga, Cavani ended up staying put amid reports that Atletico could not agree a fee.

Now he is almost certainly heading for the exit door as the expiry date on his deal looms.

Simeone is targeting a new striker next season, according to the report, and after failing to land Cavani in January he is keen to ensure the club wins the race for his signature.

Advertisements

As it stands they are the favourites to sign him although there should be plenty of suitors – with the chance to sign such a high-calibre forward on a bosman.

Last month it was reported that Cavani would be open to staying with PSG, with L’Equipe claiming that he could be persuaded into signing an extension.

Cavani has won an impressive 19 trophies during his seven-season stay in France, writing his name into PSG folklore. He is the all-time leading goalscorer in the history of the club.

Man Utd ‘ready to sign Cavani & make him one of the best-paid players in PL’

Advertisements

Manchester United reportedly ready to make Edinson Cavani one of the best-paid players in the Premier League as they line up an offer for the Uruguay international.

Cavani’s current deal with Paris Saint-Germain will expire at the end of June, meaning that, as it stands, he will be available on a free transfer ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

A number of clubs, including Atletico Madrid and Newcastle United, have been linked with the South American, who is PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer with 200 in all competitions.

The Red Devils have also been credited with an interest in recent weeks, and according to Todofichajes, the 20-time English champions are preparing a lucrative contract for the 33-year-old.

The report claims that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have already been in contact with Cavani’s agent and an agreement could be reached ‘in the coming weeks’.

The striker has struggled to command a regular starting spot at PSG this season but has still managed seven goals in 22 appearances for the French champions.

Inter to sign Cavani on free transfer in summer If Lautaro leaves.

Advertisements

Inter are considering making a move to sign Paris Saint Germain forward Edinson Cavani as a free agent in the summer if Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez is sold to Barcelona, according to a report from today’s paper edition of the French newspaper L’Equipe.

The report details how the 33-year-old Uruguayan forward’s contract is expiring with PSG at the end of the season. The player wants to stay in Paris despite the variety of offers he’s received, but is hoping that PSG will approach him to discuss a contract renewal. His future may depend on what PSG decide to do about Argentine forward Mauro Icardi, who is currently on loan at the club from Inter.

The Nerazzurri would be happy to sign Cavani in the summer, the report continues, but only if Lautaro is sold to the Blaugrana. Cavani has made 22 appearances so far this season, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in that time.

Cavani ‘open to extending his stay at PSG’ despite Atletico interest

Edinson Cavani is open to extending his stay at Paris Saint-Germain beyond this summer, despite speculation he will leave the club when his contract expires.

Advertisements

The Uruguayan international has been heavily linked with a move away from the club, with Atletico Madrid reportedly attempting to sign him during the January transfer window.

However the move broke down, and French newspaper L’Equipe have now reported he could sign an extension to his current deal.

Diego Simeone’s side is favourite to sign the 33-year-old as he looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of the next campaign.

Advertisements

A potential move to sign him in January fell apart due to a disagreement over transfer fees, with Atletico president Enrique Cerezeo publicly criticising the French club.

The LaLiga side are not the only team interested in Cavani’s services, with Manchester United, Inter Milan and several South American teams, including Flamengo, all reportedly interested.

With his contract expiration date looming large, the Uruguayan striker has not confirmed any intent to leave the reigning French champions.

Advertisements

This is despite his relationship with the club becoming increasingly fractured in recent months.

Atletico will continue to monitor the situation and might reassess the situation when Ligue 1 football returns following the coronavirus pandemic.

Since Cavani signed for PSG in 2013, the prolific striker has scored 200 goals in 300 appearances across all competitions.

He has contributed heavily to the club’s domestic success, helping them win five out of the last six French league championships.

ATL Madrid Sets To Re-bid Cavani

Atlético Madrid President Aims Dig at Edinson Cavani’s Agent & Family Over Failed january move…

Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has hit out at the representatives of Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani after a deal to sign the Uruguayan broke down.

Los Rojiblancos were eager to bring Cavani to the club during the January window, and he was keen to make the move after handing in a transfer request. However, the two sides never managed to strike a deal.

Edinson Cavani
Speaking to Movistar Futbol (via Goal) after his side’s 1-0 loss to Real Madrid, Cerezo suggested that the deal was held back by Cavani’s agent and family, whose demands saw the move break down.

“Someday I will tell why Cavani did not come and they will prove me right,” Cerezo explained. “I don’t want to point anyone out, but I think it’s a shame about the situation of some players with their relatives and their representatives. It’s outrageous. We’re not here to be robbed or do anything strange.”

This appears to back up an earlier report from Mundo Deportivo, which claimed that Cavani’s agent, Walter Guglielmone, wanted €18m for his part in the deal – almost equal to the transfer fee which Atlético had offered.

However, Guglielmone hit back at such allegations, telling Cadena SER that the deal broke down because the two clubs could not reach an agreement.

“Do you think that Edi did not play for almost a month with PSG so that I could drop the operation for a commission and stop Edi from fulfilling his dream of going to Atlético Madrid?,” he said.

“And with all the mess we put together with the PSG? If it were for money, Edi would have gone to England, Manchester [United] or Chelsea.

Edinson Cavani
“Atlético could not cover the total economic cost of the operation and PSG did not want to lower their asking price. Atlético Madrid did not close the agreement,” the agent added (via AS).

“Who is Enrique Cerezo? I never saw him this month, I don’t even know what role he plays.”

Manchester United were also deterred from doing a deal for Cavani due to the money involved, estimated to be in excess of £65m according to journalist Paul Hirst. This figure includes a €20m (£16.8m) transfer fee and two and a half years of the Uruguayan’s £360,000 per week wages. These figures were not to the Red Devils’ liking, leading the club to explore different options.

Cavani agrees 3 years contract with A. Madrid, PSG not letting go.

Edinson Cavani has reached an agreement to join La Liga side Atletico Madrid, with the Uruguayan expected to pen a three-year contract when he leaves Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Cavani has established himself as a modern great at PSG, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and winning countless domestic honours despite dealing with some pretty egotistical players over the years, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Neymar.

However, it is expected he will leave in the summer, with PSG clearly looking to the future with the loan signing of Mauro Icardi before the 2019/20 season.

Now, Gianluca DiMarzio claims Atleti want to bring the former Napoli forward to Wanda Metropolitano as possible cover for Diego Costa, who is currently injured and doubtful to feature in the Champions League clashes with Liverpool in 2020.

However, the report also adds that an agreement between PSG and Atleti is still yet to be reached. Los Colchoneros boss Diego Simeone is said to have been eyeing Cavani for years, but may have to sell a few of his players before being able to bring the 32-year-old in.

Misfiring winger Thomas Lemar is one such player who has been linked with a move away from Madrid, with PSG’s Ligue 1 rivals Lyon interested and Simeone is thought to be prepared to cut his losses on a player who is yet to score or assist this season.

While Alvaro Morata has managed seven La Liga goals in 15 appearances, there is a distinct lack of threat elsewhere on the pitch for Atleti, with five players currently stuck on two league goals for the season each, including forwards Costa, Joao Felix and Angel Correa.

FBL-FRA-LIGUE1-RENNES-PSG
Cavani would be an obvious improvement to Atleti’s attacking options, even if he is approaching the twilight years of his career and has struggled with injuries this season. In eight Ligue 1 appearances Cavani has struck twice, also managing a Champions League goal across two substitute appearances.
