Arshad Malik, PIA CEO clears Air on crash.

The PIA plane, which crashed in Karachi on Friday afternoon, was “technically sound”, PIA CEO Arshad Malik told a press conference in Karachi on Friday evening.

Malik said that 2-3 days were required to complete the operation and then the Aviation Ministry would launch an inquiry into the crash.

He said he wanted the inquiry report to be completed as soon as possible but could not give a timeframe for that. He said that PIA would not interfere in the inquiry.

The PIA chief said 99 people, including passengers and air crew, were onboard the ill-fated plane and “we have reports of 19 dead in Civil Hospital and 22 in other hospitals” as of now.

He said the pilot established a final landing approach and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) control room gave him a green signal to go ahead.

Advertisements

“The pilot then did a go-around. He said he is preparing for a second approach. “Now what was the reason for the go-around? Please do not speculate,” Malik said, adding that facts could be ascertained through flight recorder and the black box.

“Nothing can be said until the black box is found,” he said. After the go-around, the PIA official said, the pilot gave a call, saying he “will establish for second approach”.

“Something happened there and there can only be ambiguities until we receive the voice and data recorders.

Advertisements

I say this with responsibility that when it is received, we’ll know whether there was a technical fault, some other issue, some outside activity, bird hit, etc.

“When the plane lowered down, the ATC asked the pilot if there was an issue and the pilot said, ‘Yes, I am facing a problem,’ after which the communication was cut off.”

“The plane crash-landed in a street: it caused damage but thankfully no building collapsed,” he said. He spoke about the victims and the response to the incident.

Advertisements

He said that families of the victims were welcome to come and stay at airport hotels in Karachi that have been vacated. All affected persons are going to be accommodated at airport hotels and other government facilities.

He said the Safety Investigation Board “is a government body that will oversee the investigation” and it was “independent of PIA and will operate under its own SOPs”.

Malik said the monitoring of the aircraft’s technical soundness was done by the industry, which has a database through which “they keep a close eye on the aircraft’s health”.

“I do not wish to give any further information [on the survivors] and I do not want to give anyone false hopes.

Our emergency response centre is working round-the-clock to ascertain the facts,” he said. “I will provide more information as soon as we have it,” he promised.

Many Missing, One Dead As Canadian Helicopter Crash.

Advertisements

A Canadian sailor’s body has been found amid debris from a navy helicopter that crashed during a NATO operation in the sea between Greece and Italy, officials said Thursday.

Five other crew members from the Cyclone Sikorsky CH-148 helicopter are still missing..

It was returning to the Canadian warship HMCS Fredericton after a training mission when contact was lost on Wednesday evening.

“Yesterday, a Royal Canadian Navy helicopter on a NATO mission, carrying six members of the Canadian Armed Forces, went down with all hands in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Greece,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a news conference in Ottawa.

“One casualty was recovered and five are missing,” he said.

Advertisements

A Greek military officer said the debris had been found “in Italy’s zone of control and intervention,” specifying the wreckage belonged to the Canadian helicopter.

The Canadian frigate and submarine-hunting helicopter were 100 days into a NATO mission, aimed at deterring Russia.

More than 900 Canadian soldiers are deployed throughout Eastern Europe as part of Operation Reassurance Canada’s largest current international military deployment.

Advertisements

Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said the cause of the crash was “unknown,” but that an automatic beacon was located in the waters moments after contact was lost, and the helicopter’s cockpit voice and flight data recorders had since been recovered.

At the time of the accident the crew and allied ships were “not conducting surveillance or targeted operations on any particular vessel, adversary or otherwise”, Canada’s chief of the defence staff, General Jon Vance, said.

“We can’t rule anything out but I’m quite certain from a military situation, (the helicopter crash) was not a function of contact or shootdown,” he said.

Advertisements

Canada’s top general said a “very sizeable debris field” had been found and that a search and rescue operation continues in the 3,000-feet (900-meter) deep sea.

‘Air, sea search’

Vance also confirmed that the body of Sub Lieutenant Abbigail Cowbrough was recovered from the crash site.

Advertisements

Her father Shane Cowbrough said in a social media post he was “broken and gutted” by the loss of his eldest daughter.

“There are no words,” he said.

The two pilots, Captain Brenden MacDonald and Captain Kevin Hagen, as well as Captain Maxime Miron-Morin, Sub-Lieutenant Matthew Pyke and Master Corporal Matthew Cousins were also confirmed missing.

Advertisements

NATO ships and aircraft were taking part in the search, supported by Greece, Italy, Turkey and the United States, Juanita Chang, spokeswoman for Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), said.

Initial reports said the helicopter had been over international waters 50 nautical miles (93 kilometers) off Kefalonia.

Around the time of the crash, Italian, Greek and Turkish frigates were taking part in naval exercises along with the Canadians.

Advertisements

Chang said the Fredericton was part of NATO’s Standing Maritime Group Two and had recently sailed from the base of Souda on Crete on a mission of “maritime situational awareness in the Mediterranean”.

The group “performed several exercises with units of the Turkish navy followed with exercises with the (Greek) navy and air force this past week,” Chang said.

HMCS Fredericton had left Canada on January 20 and was scheduled to return to its home port of Halifax in July.

Advertisements

During the crash investigation to follow and in order “to rule out that there’s a fleet-wide problem”, all of the Canadian military’s relatively new Cyclone helicopters would be grounded temporarily, Vance said.

He noted only one other accident involving the helicopters, in which strong winds had “knocked the helicopter around”, since they started to be deployed in 2015, replacing a fleet of aging Sea Kings.

Vanessa is suing helicopter company over death of her husband, Kobe and daughter Gianna Bryant

Vanessa Bryant is suing the helicopter company, Island Express, after a crash killed her Husband, Kobe, Gianna Bryant, seven other people, including the pilot, Ara George Zobayan.

The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, the same day the “Celebration of Life” for Kobe and Gianna was in progress at the Staples Center.

N.Rs received that the lawsuit alleges Island Express was only allowed to fly under visual flight rules, and the conditions the day of the crash were not conducive for such flying. The fog was extremely low when the Sikorsky S-76B took off from John Wayne Airport, and the pilot is said to have been in blinding conditions moments before the crash.

The lawsuit also reportedly says that the pilot was travelling at 180mph in a steep decline amid the fog. Also, the lawsuit states that the pilot failed to monitor and assess the weather before take-off, as well as failing to obtain weather data prior to the flight. The pilot is also said to have failed to abort the flight upon learning of the cloudy conditions.

An allegation toward the pilot, Zobayan states that he did not avoid “natural obstacles” in the flight path. The lawsuit says Island Express embarked on unnecessary and needlessly risky means of transportation given the conditions. Damages are asked for in the suit for “pre-impact” terror, which regards the emotional distress Kobe and Gianna suffered as the helicopter crashed.

Russia: 94 persons escape Boeing plane’s death

A Boeing 737-500 airliner with 94 people on board made a hard landing in northwestern Russia on Sunday, carrier UTair said, but no one was badly hurt.
It said the airliner, arriving at Usinsk airport in the Komi Republic about 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) from Moscow, made the hard landing because of wind shear – a sudden change of wind velocity and/or direction.

The plane’s main landing gear was damaged in the landing but the crew managed to bring the aircraft to a halt on the runway, UTair said in a statement. All passengers and crew safely left the airliner.

Pictures posted on the websites of the regional government and emergency situations ministry showed the airliner lying flat on its belly on a runway covered partly with snow.

Last week in Istabul, a Pegasus Airline Boeing 737 almost made a hard landing, skidding off the runway with several fatalities and scores of injuries reported.

Oscar dies in helicopter crash with Bryant ..

The basketball legend and one of his daughters were aboard his private helicopter over Calabasas when it crashed Sunday.
Kobe Bryant, who starred for 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers and won five NBA championships, died Sunday in a helicopter crash. He was 41.

The basketball icon and 2018 Oscar winner and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, were aboard his private helicopter when it crashed in Calabasas, California, about 30 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Nine people, including the pilot, died in the accident, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a news conference. He would not name any of those killed. “At this point in time we have nothing that we can add until the coroner does her job,” he said.

However, Orange Coast College assistant baseball coach Ron La Ruffa told the Orange County Register that John Altobelli, the team’s coach of more than two decades, was among those who perished. Also killed were Altobelli’s wife, Keri, and one of their daughters, Alyssa, according to CNN. Alyssa, 13, and Gianni played basketball together.

Another victim was youth basketball coach Christina Mauser, according to the Register. Sarah Chester and her middle school aged daughter Payton were on also on board, CNN reports. The Times identified the pilot as Ara Zobayan, who regularly flew for Bryant.

Deputies responded to a 911 call about the crash on a foggy morning near Las Virgenes Road and Willow Glen Street at 9:47 a.m., Daryl Osby, chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, said. The helicopter, a Sikorsky S-76B built in 1991, departed John Wayne Airport in Orange County at 9:06 a.m. Sunday, the Times noted, citing publicly available flight records.

The crash, which triggered a brushfire on a hillside, is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. During an evening news conference, Villanueva said that the FAA was joining the NTSB investigating the accident. He added that the condition and location of the crash site meant that it would be days before there were any clues as to the cause of the crash.

ESPN senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, quoting sources, wrote on Twitter that “Bryant was on his way to a travel basketball game with his daughter Gianna when the helicopter crashed. Those aboard the helicopter also included another player and parent.”

Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy in nearby Thousand Oaks was holding a basketball tournament on Sunday. It was canceled.

While the cause of the crash is unknown, the L.A. Police Department and the county sheriff’s department grounded their helicopters due to weather conditions at the time.

During his playing career, Bryant regularly took a helicopter to Lakers games from his Orange County home in the Newport Coast community.

Hundreds of fans gathered outside Staples Center, site of Sunday night’s Grammy Awards and home of the Lakers, to pay tribute to the superstar. “We’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built,” Grammy host Alicia Keys said at the start of the telecast.

And DeAnza Park in Calabasas was designated as a mourning site where fans could leave flowers and pay respects to the crash victims.

ABC announced a primetime special about Bryant on Sunday, set to air later in the night, called Kobe Bryant: The Legend, hosted by Good Morning America anchors Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan and ESPN and ABC News’ Tom Rinaldi.

Bryant won the best animated short Oscar for his five-minute autobiographical film Dear Basketball. He wrote, executive produced and lent his voice to the project.

“I don’t know if it’s possible — I mean, as basketball players, we’re really supposed to shut up and dribble,” he said in his Oscar acceptance speech. “I’m glad we do a little bit more than that. Thank you Academy for this amazing honor. Thank you John Williams for such a wonderful piece of music. Thank you Verizon for believing in the film. Thank you Mali Carter, without you we wouldn’t be here. And to my wife, Vanessa, our daughters, Natalia, Gianna and Bianka, ti amo con tutto il mio cuore [I love you with all my heart]. You are my inspiration. Thank you so much, guys.”

Bryant and his wife had a fourth daughter, Capri, in June.

Ethan Miller/Getty Images
Kobe Bryant and daughter Gianna at the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas.
Asked by The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg in a 2017 Awards Chatter podcast what he would have done had he not played basketball, Bryant said: “I’d be writing stories. Storytelling is something that’s just a part of me, something that I love every bit as much as I’ve ever loved basketball, which I’m very fortunate to be able to say.”

Bryant most recently served as an executive producer on the ESPN+ series Detail, a deep, analytical dive into the sport he loved.

A five-time NBA champion — with Shaquille O’Neal in 2000, 2001 and 2002 and then in 2009 and 2010 — and 18-time All-Star, Bryant is the Lakers’ franchise leader in points (33,643), games played (1,346), 3-pointers (1,827), steals (1,944) and free throws (8,378). He became the first player to spend at least 20 seasons with one franchise and retired in 2016 with an emotional 60-point performance in his farewell game against Utah.

One of the most tenacious and clutch players in NBA history, the 6-foot-6 Bryant — who gave himself the nickname “Black Mamba” — scored 81 points in a game in 2006. He was selected the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2008 and named MVP of the NBA Finals in 2009 and ’10. His uniform numbers 8 and 24 have been retired by the Lakers.

On Saturday, current Lakers star LeBron James passed Bryant to become the No. 3 scorer in NBA history. The game took place in Bryant’s hometown of Philadelphia.

“It’s not supposed to make sense, but it just happens,” James told reporters after the game. “And I’m happy just to be in any conversation with Kobe Bean Bryant, one of the all-time greatest basketball players to ever play, one of the all-time greatest Lakers. The man has two jerseys hanging up in Staples Center. It’s just crazy.”

(‘Dear Basketball’)
Born on Aug. 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Bryant was the only son of former NBA player Joe “Jellybean” Bryant. He spent many years in Italy as a youngster when his dad played professionally in that country after leaving the NBA, and he was fluent in Italian (and Spanish, too).

A sensation at Lower Merion High School outside Philadelphia, Bryant decided to bypass college and go directly to the NBA. At age 17, he was made the No. 13 pick in the NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets, who then traded him to Los Angeles for center Vlade Divac in a deal that was engineered by another Lakers legend, Jerry West, then the team’s general manager.

“Particularly when he was young, to be a part of his life and to watch his career grow, watch him grow, this is one of the most tragic days of my life,” West told the Times.

“He was an incredible athlete and a leader,” Lakers great and THR columnist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said. “He inspired a whole generation of young athletes.”

Added NBA commissioner Adam Silver: “For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning. … He was generous with the wisdom he acquired and saw it as his mission to star it with future generations of players, taking special delight in passing down his love of the game to Gianna.”

He earned gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

In July 2003, Bryant was arrested in Eagle, Colorado, on charges of sexual assault. A 19-year-old hotel employee accused him of rape, telling authorities she was assaulted by him while he was staying at The Lodge and Spa at Cordillera awaiting surgery.

Bryant admitted he and the accuser did have relations but claimed it was consensual. He also made a public apology to his wife. The criminal case was dropped after Bryant’s accuser refused to testify, but a civil suit was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum. Part of the suit involved Bryant’s apology, although he never admitted fault.

On the origin of Black Mamba, Bryant told Feinberg: “There was a lot of things going on personally with the situation going on in Colorado and flying back and forth for games and trying to hold my family together as well. It just felt like the game, which was always like a safe haven for me, was being compromised as well.

“I needed to create some sort of an alter ego, just for myself, so when I step out on the court I’m somebody different, not the person that was sitting in a courthouse. I’m somebody different. And it helped me for my sanity. And then it just turned into something more.”

He and Vanessa married in April 2001, and they had Natalia in January 2003, Gianna in May 2006, Bianka in December 2016 and Capri seven months ago.

Neymar Jr. dedicated his second goal against Lille FC to Kobe Bryant ..

Neymar dedicated his second goal in Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 win at Lille on Sunday to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, whose death on Sunday in a helicopter crash shocked the world.

The Brazilian slotted home the 52nd-minute penalty that put PSG two goals up in the French Ligue 1 clash and went over to the television cameras by the side of the Stade Pierre Mauro pitch to make the number 24 with his fingers in honour of Bryant’s shirt number.

“It’s deeply saddening for the world of sport and for all of us,” said Neymar to Canal+ after the win, which put PSG 10 points clear at the top of the league.

“Not just for basketball fans, but for everything he did for the sport.”

Bryant, who had been nominated for the NBA Hall of Fame in December, was confirmed dead at 41 years old on Sunday after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames in foggy conditions in suburban Los Angeles, leaving five people dead.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials said there were no survivors from the morning crash on a rugged hillside in Calabasas, west of LA.

In an email, Mayor of Calabasas Alicia Weintraub confirmed Bryant was among the victims.

“Yes, it is confirmed,” Weintraub wrote.

DJ khaled, John Legend, others pay tributes to Nipsey & Bryant ..

The Grammys lined up a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle nearly a year after his shooting death in March of last year. Tragically, his tribute would find itself making room for two as he was ultimately projected alongside Kobe Bryant after the basketball legend passed away earlier in the day.

YG and Roddy Ricch found themselves among collaborators Meek Mill, DJ Khaled, John Legend and gospel mainstay Kirk Franklin as they led an emotional rendition of Khaled’s “Higher” featuring Legend and Nip before the crowd gathered inside of the Staples Center.

Earlier in the evening, Nipsey Hussle earned his very first Grammy after posthumously winning the prize for Best Rap Performance for his “Racks In The middle” track. His family, including Lauren London, his grandmother, his brother, daughter, and sister all accepted the award on Hussle’s behalf. As for Kobe, host Alicia Keys called on Boyz II Men for an impromptu performance of “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” before displaying his No. 8 and No. 24 Lakers jerseys above the crowd.

Kobe Bryant’s death: Toke Makinwa respond to criticizers..

A great number of people all over the world have put up posts to mourn NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and the other people who died in the helicopter crash in Calabasas, California.

However, some critics opposed the overwhelming show of pain, especially coming from those who never knew him personally and who didn’t celebrate him while he was alive. They accused those mourning him of hypocrisy and trying to do things because it’s trending.

Responding, Toke Makinwa, wrote: “Before you criticize people for mourning a legend they haven’t met or paying their respect to Kobe, before you comment foolishly, think about your life, your work, your message to the world and hope that when it’s your turn to go the world will feel your departure.”
