I cannot continue in PDP, Umahi is lucky to have left – Matawalle

According to the governor, the extent of bad blood in the PDP is partly responsible for Mr Umahi’s defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, saying “everyone feels welcome only in a house where he feels comfortable”.

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has said that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is becoming hostile for its members, lamenting over his recent experience with his governor colleagues from the South-South region of the country.

Mr Matawalle, who made the lamentation in a statement on Friday by his media aide, Zailani Bappa, commended Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State “for his bold decision” to leave the party.

He said: “If this trend of generating bad blood amongst us continues unabated, our great party will increasingly be on the receiving end as we move towards the election year, 2023.”

Speaking further, Mr Matawalle said: “I am having a very bad experience of recent from some of my PDP governor colleagues which I still find very puzzling.

“For instance, the South-South governors [who had been] accusing me in the media are PDP Governors.

“They are also the same people who brewed controversy over the so-called Zamfara gold, [which was] premised on deliberate misinformation and outright lies.

“Surprisingly, it is the APC Federal Government which has all the correct records on the gold mining issue that came out to defend me in this saga.

“As PDP colleagues, I expected the governors to contact me first and find out my own side of the story before unleashing their venom in the media,” Mr Matawalle posited.

“As the brouhaha lasted, I commended President Muhammadu Buhari for being supportive of our efforts to organise the economic sector in the state to avoid using the mineral deposits to promote insecurity in our dear state”

“Today, the Federal Government is issuing licences to deserving companies to operate in the mining sector in the state. The biggest company with an investment of billions of naira is owned by a Nigerian from Anambra state.

“And I wonder where the idea of Zamfara state owning the gold mines emanated from. As at now, the state Government does not have a hand in any of the mining activity in the state because the constitution does not empower us to do so,” Mr Matawalle noted.

The governor, therefore, called on the South-South governors “to eschew intellectual idleness and support its people to operate modular refineries as provided by the law and lift their people out of fear rather than sit behind and start chasing shadows rather than substance.”

Impeachment request against David Umahi rise days after defection

The group maintained that there is no there is no known factionalisation nor internal crisis in the PDP before Dave Umahi defected from the PDP to the APC last week.

The Association of Ebonyi State Indigenes in the Diaspora (AESID) has enjoined the Ebonyi State House of Assembly to embark on the impeachment of the Governor Dave Umahi for allegedly breaching constitutional provision due to his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group referred to a subsisting Supreme Court verdicts which insist that a governor cannot defect to another political party unless there is internal leadership crises as basis for its assertions.

AESID’s President General, Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, in a statement contended that the PDP had been at peace since the court ousted the Ali Modu Sheriff as PDP’s factional chairman four years ago.

“In view of the foregoing breaches of the fundamental rights of citizens of our dear State therefore and the potentialities of same to plunge Ebonyi into a serious political crises , a threat we had foresaw and consistently cautioned Governor Umahi about, AESID boldly urge Ebonyi lawmakers to immidiately commence impeachment proceedings against the Governor,” Oluchukwu said.

” We make this call due to our believe and understanding of Umahi as a brutal dictator who is ready to set our dear state on fire in pursuit of his ego-laced selfish interests.”

The group condemned in its totality and took a swipe at Umahi for his subtle threats to his appointees and the State legislators including the suspension of Victor Aleke from the State’s House of Assembly for keeping fate with the mandate given him by his people of Ebonyi North-west constituency.

“Finally, like we have always reiterated, Ebonyi belongs to all of us and one man’s personal ambition and interest cannot plunge the rest of the State which our fore-fathers laboured for many years to have into crises of monumental proportion,” Oluchukwu said.

” Ebonyi cannot be set aflame simply because Governor Umahi wants to protect his wealth belonging to Ebonyi people with the pretence of running for the highest office in the land.

“It has become obvious to us and every discerning mind that Umahi is deliberately creating the crises in PDP through Barr. Nwebonyi in order for some of the State lawmakers to have a fertile ground to defect with him in the guise of cracks, factions or crises in Ebonyi PDP.”

I have no other boss apart from Mr. President. And by my culture and upbringing you do not insult the elders. It’s not in my character.

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has responded to Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who said that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, made him (Umahi) what he is today.

Governor Umahi told NoRM‘s known Media that he had contributed so much in the making of PDP, serving as a peacemaker and negotiator, insisting that he made the party what it is today and not the other way around.

Wike had in one of his recent interviews said that “Umahi has the right to move to the APC, it’s his constitutional right, but we cannot in all cases allow Umahi blackmail PDP that made him chairman of the party, deputy governor, and governor and then you now realize there is an injustice against southeast.”

Furthermore, the Governor who dumped the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress on Thursday, said that some Governors of the opposition party who speak against the Buhari government during the day, ‘go up and down at night’ begging.

“People say PDP made me what I am. That is absolutely rubbish. We made PDP what PDP is,” he said.

“It is the people that make the party and I’ve contributed so much in the making of PDP not the other way around. I’ve been a peacemaker.

“I’ve been a negotiator and even the Governor of Edo State coming on board was my prophecy which my fellow Governor directed the working committee to come and probe me but that was a big minus for them because you don’t probe a sitting Governor.

“Another one is that the PDP wants me to be castigating Mr. President.

“And some of them [PDP Governors] speak rubbish in the day and in the night they’re caps in hands and they start going up and down. I don’t do like that. So Mr. President remains my boss, father and boss and I’ve no regret about that.”

Ebonyi: NASS disowns David Umahi over defection to APC

The National Leadership of the PDP had in a statement denied that Umahi dumped the party because of alleged injustice.

The Ebonyi State People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the National Assembly has disowned Governor David Umahi over his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Umahi had on Tuesday formally announced his defection from the PDP to the APC.

The Chairman of the Ebonyi National Assembly caucus and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu, at a press conference in Abuja, said though Umahi has the right to join any political party of his choice, the reasons he advanced for his defection were untenable.

He said the National Assembly members from the state, would not abandon the PDP because of Umahi.

Egwu said: “We remain proud card carrying members of the PDP, the platform on which we contested elections in 2019 and won.

He insisted that the Governor should be the last person to jump ship having benefitted immensely from PDP in the past which included his appointment State PDP chairman, election as deputy governor and two-term governor on the platform of the party.

Egwu while reading the text of the press conference, said: “We, the undersigned members of the Ebonyi State PDP caucus of the National Assembly, wish to address our fellow PDP members and other well-meaning Nigerians, on the defection of the Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief David Umahi from the PDP to the APC.

“For the sake of clarity, we wish to state that not a single member of the Ebonyi State PDP caucus of the National Assembly is defecting to the APC.

“The three Distinguished Senators and five House of Representatives members remain proud card-carrying members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the platform under which we contested and won elections in 2019.

“The major reason given by Chief Umahi for defecting from the PDP to the APC is now in the Public domain which is that the PDP has not been fair to the People of the South East on the issue of zoning the Presidency and vice Presidency.

“While we support that it is the turn of the South East to fly the Presidential flag of any of the major political parties come 2023, yet we consider it impolitic, indecent and unwise to give ultimatums and conditionalities in a bid to secure zoning.

“Indeed, if there is any Ebonyi person who should remain eternally grateful to the PDP, that individual ought to be the Governor David Umahi; a man who was appointed the Ebonyi State Chairman of the PDP, made deputy governor of a PDP administration, and was elected for two terms under the banner of the PDP.

“As Governor, his two younger brothers were elected to principal offices of the PDP; one (Mr Austine Umahi) as the National Vice Chairman (South East) and another (Mr. Maxwell Umahi) as the Deputy State Chairman of the PDP.

Advertisements

“As democrats, we concede Chief Umahi’s right to join any political association of his choice.

“However, as Federal Lawmakers we are not unaware of the Supreme Court decision that candidates are products of political parties.

“What it means is that political office holders are not at liberty to migrate from one political platform to another, particularly when there is no division in their party.

“We wish to use this opportunity to thank the leadership of our grate party, the PDP for their prompt action in dissolving the ward, local government, state and Zonal structures of the party in Ebonyi State, and their announcement of a state caretaker team.

Advertisements

“We also wish to thank teeming members and supporters in our various constituencies who have remained undaunted and committed to their membership of the PDP.

“We also wish to thank the South East caucus, and indeed the entire PDP family of the National Assembly.

“The lawmakers were joined at the press conference by the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South).”

The text of the press conference was signed by Senator Sam Ominyi Egwu, Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator Mike Ama Nnachi, Rt. Hon. Sylvester Ogbaga, Rt. Hon. Igariwey Iduma Enwo, Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku, Rt. Hon. Edwin Anayo and Rt. Hon. Livinus Makwe.

Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), joined the Ebonyi State PDP lawmakers at the press conference.
