Dino Melaye defeat FG in court over Crimes charge.

A Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Tuesday discharged former Kogi West Senator, Dino Daniel Melaye of criminal charges leveled against him by the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF.

The FCT High Court cleared Melaye of giving false information to police, as claimed by the AGF.

He was accused of deliberately accusing the ex-Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, now Deputy Governor, David Onoja of plotting to assassinate him in April 2017.

Melaye was accused of giving a false statement during a conversation with Mohammed Abubakar, son of Abubakar Audu, ex-Kogi governor.

In a two-count charge, the former lawmaker was accused of giving out false information with the intent of harming Onoja’s reputation.

His counsel, Mr. Olusegun Jolaawo, SAN, had filed a no-case-submission when the prosecution closed their case.

However, Justice Olasumbo Goodluck, while delivering a ruling on the no-case -submission, held that “there was no evidence that the defendant gave false information to any person in public service.”

The Judge described the evidence given by a government witness Mr. Edward Onoja as “vague and unreliable”

Justice Goodluck held that “neither of the two witnesses elicited evidence on the status of Mohammed Abubaker Audu.”

Infectious diseases bill: Dino Melaye’s suit to no avail

The hearing of a suit filed by a former Senator representing Kogi West at the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, over the Infectious Diseases Bill has suffered a setback.

This was after a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday rejected Melaye’s request to restrain the House of Representatives from continuing the consideration of the bill.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, in her ruling, refused to grant the order because the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila who is the third defendant in the suit, had yet to be served with the court documents.

She adjourned the suit till June 1 for further hearing.

Dino, who instituted the suit on May 5, 2020, asked the court to declare that some sections of the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill 2020, currently being debated on the floor of the House of Representatives are draconian, oppressive and authoritarian.

Advertisements

The former lawmaker also wants the court to rule that the Bill is in breach of his fundamental rights as provided for in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

The respondents to the bill are the Clerk of the National Assembly; the Clerk of the House of Representatives; the Speaker of the House of Representatives; the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu.

At the resumed hearing of the suit on Wednesday, lawyer to the House of Representatives, Kayode Ajulo informed the court that he is yet to be served with the processes as he insists that the service is key and fundamental to fair hearing.

Advertisements

Also, clerks of both the National Assembly and the House of Representatives and the AGF were absent from court and not represented by their lawyers.

The plaintiff’s lawyer, Okoro Nkemakolam, said the respondents had failed to file any processes to show cause why such restraining order should not be issued by the court.

He urged the court to order parties to maintain the status quo to protect the subject matter and prevent a situation of foisting a “fait accompli” on the court.

Advertisements

The judge declined to grant the plaintiff’s request on the grounds that the May 13, 2020 summons for the defendants to appear in court on Tuesday to show cause why they should not be restrained concerning the bill, was predicated on the service of all the respondents with the required court documents.

She then ordered that the Speaker of the House of Reps be served through his lawyer, Ajulo and adjourned till June 1 for further hearing.

Former senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has filed a lawsuit at a Federal High Court in Abuja against the infectious diseases bill titled ‘Control of Infectious Diseases Bill 2020’,

Defendants in the suit are Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, among others.

The bill which was sponsored by Gbajabiamila and his colleagues, Pascal Obi and Tanko Sununu, seeks to empower the Federal Government to convert any property in the country, including private properties, to isolation centres.

According to them, the proposed law is designed to prevent the spread of a possible outbreak of infectious diseases but members of the House protested that they were not served copies of the bill while it was read at plenary on Tuesday before it hurriedly passed first and second readings on the same day.

There were also accusations that the sponsors largely plagiarised a similar law on disease control by Singapore.

COVID-19: We’ve sinned, we should apologize to God – Dino Melaye.

Former senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, Dino Melaye has advised that people should seek forgiveness from God in this coronavirus pandemic.

In a series of tweets, Dino Melaye revealed that people have totally forgotten God with sin becoming a normal lifestyle on earth.

Tweeted:

1)This corona period for me is a sober reflection Time, creating more time for Him (God), reorganizing and discipline oneself. Most importantly staying attuned to His will. Do we still remember the story in the bible about the tower of Babel.

2)They want to build towers to see and meet with God. Who can contend with the Lord God almighty? He God got them speaking in different tongues & there was confusion & they couldn’t understand each other anymore. This is exactly what is going on with the world superpowers now.

3) Governments have become gods, individuals have become diabolically arrogant, leaders have become thieves & cabals, citizens have become complacent & greedy, the truth has no home on earth again, men of God have become lovers of money, kings can no longer stand for their subjects,

4) sin has become a normal lifestyle on earth. The Lord is laughing at us in His sour displeasure. I repeat we must apologize to God & repent of our sins. All leaders in Nigeria including me must restitute & reconcile with God. Judgement is neigh. These are signs of the end time.
