Man drags Hanan Buhari, DSS to court over MTN sim card ..

The Federal High Court, Asaba, Delta State has fixed 12th February 2020 for a hearing of the lawsuit filed by Anthony Okolie against President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter Hanan, Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) and the Department of State Service (DSS).

Okolie was arrested and detained by the DSS for a period of 10 weeks for using an MTN sim card previously used by Hanan Buhari.

“The sim card became redundant and was recycled to the market for sale (after Hanan stopped using it),” Okolie’s lawyer Tope Akinyode said.

“Okolie lawfully bought the sim card after years of redundancy unknown to him who the previous owner was.”

Akinyode said Okolie’s detention was unlawful because he has the receipt for the purchase of the sim card and all other documents pertaining to the sim card.

In the lawsuit, Okolie is demanding a N500m compensation and public apology for the violation of his fundamental human rights.

The case has been assigned to Justice Nnamdi Dimgba of Court 2, Federal High, Asaba, Delta State and will come up before the court on 12th February 2020.

Akinyode maintained that the lawsuit will serve as “an eternal caution against flagrant abuse of power by public officers.”

Why Oko Oloyun was shot dead: Police explained ..

The police stated that Oko Oloyun’s death may be connected to the fraud case in his Lagos office.

24 hours after the assassination of popular traditional medicine expert, Alhaji Fatai Yusuf, popularly known as Oko Oloyun, the Oyo Police Command says it has commenced investigation into the murder and that it probably has a clue on why he was gunned down.

Oko Oloyun was on Thursday, January 23, 2020, shot dead by some yet-to-be-identified gunmen.

Pulse had reported that the trado-medical practitioner was on his way from an outing when the gunmen shot at his vehicle along Eruwa-Igboora Road in the Ibarapa Central area of Oyo.

In a statement made available to the public on Friday, January 24, the state Police Command disclosed that two police escorts attached to the late businessman and some members of his staff are in custody for interrogation.

The interrogation, according to the police, followed a tip off on an alleged fraud perpetrated recently in Oko Oloyun’s Lagos office.

“Some of the staff and his two (2) Police escorts are being questioned by a team of crack detectives from the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Iyaganku, Ibadan with a view to finding and apprehending the fleeing suspects who wrecked the heinous act,” Oyo Police Spokesman, Gbenga Fadeyi said in the statement.

Possible motive

Fadeyi said the deceased may have been killed due to an alleged book-keeping fraud he detected in his Lagos office, adding that the ‘fraud’ he found out “allegedly led to the burning/destruction of some financial/bookkeeping records.”

“In addition to other possible motives, a plausible nexus is therefore being suspected between the fire incident and the attack on the deceased,” Fadeyi explained.

The police spokesman however appealed to members of the public with credible information on Oko Oloyun’s death to come forward.

Stopping of cars at irregular checkpoints; illegal – Army Commander warns

Maj. Gen. Olusegun Adeniyi, Theater Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, has cautioned motorists against stopping at irregular security check point on the Maiduguri-Damaturu road.

Adeniyi, who disclosed this on Tuesday in Maiduguri, said that intelligence reports indicates that Boko Haram were mounting road blocks and attacking motorist on the road.

He listed the designated check points to include Njimtilo, Auno, Jakana, Ngamdu and Kukareta.

Adeniyi said the road was secure as the military intensified patrol and deployed additional personnel to guarantee safety of road users.

According to him, the new measures had denied the insurgents freedom to attack commuters as well as villages along the highway.

“The problem is that Boko Haram dressed in Nigeria army stolen uniforms, having painted Hilux in Nigeria army special camouflage colours, stop some vehicles and abduct innocent Nigerians.

“So between Maiduguri and Damaturu, I have ordered that no checking of persons except at recognized checkpoint inside Auno, Jakana, Minok, Banishaik, Ngamdu, Kukareta.

” Those check points have been there for years and they do not even check individuals, they just make sure Boko Haram do not sneak terrorists and IED-laden vehicles into the two cities.

“So if anybody is being asked to stop in between this towns, he should be very wary. A lot of soldiers and other security personnel are on that road 24 hours,” he said.

Adeniyi said that the command had launched several military operations along the road to route out the insurgents hibernating around the highway to cause havoc.

“Other military operations were carried out on the road and several kilometers away from the road. More resources are being put on that road because we realized how vital that road is to all Nigerians,” he said.

The theatre commander said that the insurgents had adopted the ISIS style of winning the minds and heart of the civil populace by not attacking them in most cases with a view to set up a caliphate.

“When they enter villages, they will tell them (people) not to run, that they should cool down that they are not there to harm them. They are doing this in hope that they are going to form whatever geographical entity that also run a fake state like ISIS.”

On effort put in place to rescue the abducted victims, Adeniyi said massive operations were currently ongoing across the northeast to decimate the terrorist and rescue captured victims.

“Everyday, there are military operations throughout the Northeast. Except Boko Haram will take these people out of Nigeria, our military operations will surely reach wherever they are and by God’s grace, we will rescue them.

“I am assuring Nigerians that we will not relent in our effort to make sure we get to everywhere. We just left Mandara mountains and we know the number we rescued.”

A suit has now been filed in which Okolie is asking President Buhari’s daughter, the Department of State Services (DSS) and MTN, to pay him N500 million compensation.

Mr Okolie, 33, was arrested on July 19, 2019 in Asaba.

Securities accused of impregnating a teen

An agency under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, has reportedly accused officials of various security agencies attached to border communities in Nigeria of impregnating female residents especially teenagers in their host communities.

Report state that IPCR made the revelation during an enlightenment programme held on Saturday at Oke-Odan in the Yewa South local Government Area of Ogun State.

According to the report, the Senior Research Fellow of IPCR, Mr Akangbe Moses, lamented that security agents were compounding issues in the border areas through the act.

“Security agents are causing conflicts in their host communities. Some of them impregnate teenage girls and this has been leading to crises in those communities. This is aside from the usual problems they create.

“This is why we have been preaching women in governance so that you can collectively salvage the situation as mothers. You can contest any political office in your area as a woman, especially when you notice those who have been holding those offices are not doing it right”, Moses is quoted.

1,320 militiamen recruited to Operation Amotekun (Leopard)

The new security outfit geared towards tackling kidnapping and criminal activities in the South-West, Operation Amotekun, gained momentum on Friday as Lagos, Osun and Ekiti state governments announced they would recruit about 1,320 militiamen for the purpose.

The announcement came barely two days after South-West governors led by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State inaugurated the outfit, also called Western Nigeria Security Network.

The development came just as the police have identified about 52 deadly blackspots they would focus on in collaboration with the militiamen.

The development came amid the announcement by some social-political groups across the country endorsing the outfit, saying it would help tackle insecurity in the region.

The groups are the Arewa Consultative Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ijaw Youth Congress, Pan Nigeria Delta Forum, Middle Belt Forum and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra

Announcing their plans to recruit militiamen from the Oodua Peoples Congress, Agbekoya, Vigilantes and hunters, Lagos, Osun and Ekiti said the recruitment would be handled by each state in collaboration with the security agencies.

The Chief Press Secretary to Osun State Governor, Ismail Omipidan, said the state planned to recruit 700 locals that would work with the conventional security outfits in the state.

Omipidan also said all security agencies were involved in the recruitment, which according to him, was going on smoothly.

He added that the role of the militiamen would be restricted to intelligence gathering.

He said, “The success of the Civilian JTF initiative in the fight against insurgency has encouraged us to engage the locals primarily in the area of intelligence gathering.

“We are recruiting 700 locals and all security agencies are involved in the recruitment process. It is ongoing and I believe it will be completed soon.”

A top official of the state close to the Operation Amotekun said the state would inaugurate its own chapter of the outfit before the end of the month.

He said, “ Osun will use the Olajokun Park in Gbongan as their operational base. We are still perfecting the operational procedures and we should complete that next week.

“What we want to do now is to have men on patrol to know the areas very well. The people we will recruit will gather intelligence and send it to the operational base in Gbogan.

“They will not arrest anyone, they will only gather information. We will recruit about 10 people each through the local government areas and the local council development areas.

“These people understand the terrain, they understand the culture, beliefs and other things that can make them function better. It will be successful.”

Also, the Special Adviser on Security to Ekiti State Governor, Brig Gen Ebenezar Ogundana (retd), said on Friday that Operation Amotekun would fully take off as soon.

Ogundana said the states were awaiting the operational procedure which would define the mandate of the operators.

The security adviser said, “It will take off as soon as possible. The only thing we are waiting for is the standing operational procedure that is going to define our mandate so that we don’t send people out and something happened that we will not be able to explain. When we get the document, we will read it to them and we begin operation.”

Ogundana said they would not do any recruitment in Ekiti because “we have people we are going to use”.

He added, “We are using members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, it is an institution that is already on the ground. The Oodua Peoples Congress is a regional organisation that is fully on the ground that is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. The hunters have a national association registered with the CAC too.

“These are the people we will use and we have them in Ekiti, we have them in every local government. We have contacted the local government and they will forward their lists to us. The kabiyesis are the ones coordinating the hunters and the head of the vigilante group has the list. That is what we are compiling.

“In Ekiti, we are looking at between 400 and 500 people for a start.”

Ogundana said the vigilantes, hunters and OPC members to be recruited would be trained to enhance results for the outfit.

He said, “The roles they are going to play is in terms of gathering information which will be localised and they will be located in their own atreas.”

Also, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, on Friday said the state had donated 20 vehicles and would recruit 120 people to support Operation Amotekun.

Omotoso, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said although the state already had its local Neighbourhood Watch similar to Operation Amotekun, it would continue to support anything that would promote peace in the region.

He said, “Lagos has donated 20 vehicles and in terms of personnel, we are going to contribute no fewer than 120. We also have a template on the same security. We have been running Neighbourhood Watch and it is working for us. But it does not mean that if there is any regional idea we would not support. That is why we have contributed vehicles in terms of equipment and 120 personnel in addition to other things that we are doing.”

The commissioner said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was not able to attend the inauguration of the outfit on Thursday because he already had a scheduled programme for that day.

ACF, PANDEF, Ohanaeze, Middle Belt, others back security outfit

Meanwhile, the Arewa Consultative Forum, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Ijaw Youth Congress, Pan Nigeria Delta Forum, MASSOB and Middle Belt Forum, and the National Association of Nigerian Students on Friday said they were happy with the South-West security initiative.

The President, Ohanaeze, John Nwodo, who described it as laudable, said, “Nobody needs to tell any Nigerian today that your security is in your own hands.”

He said, “Can you run a federation where the federating units cannot control their domestic security?”

Also, the Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Mr Anthony Sani, said Operation Amotekun would help tackle the security challenges facing the region.

This was contrary to the assertion from some youths in the region that the formation of the security outfit was a “military wing” of the Oodua Peoples Congress.

The ACF chief said there was nothing wrong with the South-West governors coming together to proffers solution to the security issues in their region.

Sani said, “There is no harm in coming together against collective challenges for common good.

“Similarly, it is in the place of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to guide and protect the observance of the constitution. If the South-West goes against the constitution there is a way to caution them.”

The leader of the youth wing of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, Mr Famous Daunemigha, said, “There is nothing wrong with what the South-West has done if they did it within the confines of the law.”

MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, said, “We salute the courageous spirit of the Yoruba governors and their political, traditional, religious and opinion leaders in unity.”

IYC President, Mr Eric Omare, called on other regions like the South-East and South-South to emulate the South-West and establish their own security outfits to remain alive.

The MBF President, Dr Bitrus Pogu, said the only way to defend the country was for every community to set up their own security arrangements, noting that the security forces had failed to defend the people.

Amotekun can use guns like hunters, says ex-police commissioner

A former Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, said Operation Amotekun officials would be allowed to carry Dane guns just like the way hunters are allowed to do.

Owoseni, who is the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Security, said this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

When asked if the Operation Amotekun men would be allowed to use Dane guns, he said, “(Yes) if it is necessary for them to use in some instances, because hunters do carry their Dane guns and go with their dogs. These are their tools and it is not illegal.”

He, however, explained that the outfit would not run a detention facility but would purely be an intelligence gathering group.

When asked if they would be allowed to make arrests, the retired CP said, “The power they have to make arrest is the same power you have. Every citizen has the power of arrest. When you arrest, you take to the police station. That is the same power. They are not going to operate a detention facility. It is non-state actors participating in security.”

The Customs Border Drill Sector Coordinator for North Central Nigeria, Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba, has promised to visit border communities in Kwara State.

Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba disclosed this when the Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Salihu Yakubu Danladi, visited his office.

He made clear that the partial closing of Nigeria’s land borders is not intended to witch-hunt or obstruct any legal businesses nor any community, but to prevent the illegal export of petroleum products, to encourage local farmers and manufacturers, to control the inflow of arms and ammunition, to stop the traffick illicit drugs and other prohibited goods into the country, and to enable neighbouring countries to comply with ECOWAS protocols on cross-border trade.

Garba, who is posted from Seme Area Command to Sector Three 3, said the Nigerian Customs service is just an implementer of Federal Government policies and advised that state governments should channel their grievances through the appropriate quarters.

The Comptroller promised to use the opportunity of his visit to meet with individuals and bodies engaged in legitimate business, mentioning that border security seeks to solve the critical problems of irregular migration and trans-border crimes such as the smuggling of small arms and light weapons, illicit petroleum products, human trafficking, drug trafficking and terrorism, among other issues.

He added that these crimes must be tackled head-on and that was what had informed the Federal Government in closing the country’s land borders.

The Nigeria Customs Service on August 20, 2019, on the directive of the Federal Government, partially closed Nigeria’s land borders.

Comptroller Mohammed Uba Garba
