NBA elections: Dele Adesina disagrees with Olumide’s win, calls for fresh votes

One of the presidential candidates in the 2020 elections of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dele Adesina, has asked the Body of Trustees of the association to cancel the just concluded polls.

In his 11 page petition to the body, Adesina described the election as “electronic fraud, illegal and unconstitutional.”

The elections were conducted electronically on July 29th to July 30th at the end of which, the immediate past chairman of the NBA’s Section on Business Law, Olumide Akpata emerged the winner.

He defeated Dr. Babatunde Ajibade and Mr Dele Adesina.

But reacting to the outcome, Adesina called on the Chairman of NBA Board of Trustees, Olisa Agbakoba to “rise up and save the Association by cancelling the elections and conducting a fresh one.”

Adesina said he was one of the builders of the association and his call was driven by the members’ interest.

He cited some pre-election concerns and agitations which were studiedly neglected and disregarded by the electoral committee and alleged among other things that the Voters’ Register used in the 2020 Election was a sham, illegal, doctored and manipulated.

The candidate also alleged that the data in the election results monitoring site was programmed to produce a premeditated result and many voters were also disenfranchised.

He, however, pointed out that the processes leading up to and during the election itself have not been devoid of controversy, while also expressing hope that the repeated challenges with conducting objectively free and fair elections in the association will be resolved.

It is my fervent hope that we will get over these repeated challenges with conducting objectively free and fair elections into the leadership positions in the association.

“I say a heartfelt thank you to all the persons too numerous to mention, who supported my aspiration to be elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association.

“Though we did not get the result we wanted, the experience has been rewarding and fulfilling. I have met and established lasting bonds of friendship with colleagues from different parts of our great country Nigeria who share my values and aspirations for a better, stronger and united legal profession.

Vanessa is suing helicopter company over death of her husband, Kobe and daughter Gianna Bryant

Vanessa Bryant is suing the helicopter company, Island Express, after a crash killed her Husband, Kobe, Gianna Bryant, seven other people, including the pilot, Ara George Zobayan.

The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, the same day the “Celebration of Life” for Kobe and Gianna was in progress at the Staples Center.

N.Rs received that the lawsuit alleges Island Express was only allowed to fly under visual flight rules, and the conditions the day of the crash were not conducive for such flying. The fog was extremely low when the Sikorsky S-76B took off from John Wayne Airport, and the pilot is said to have been in blinding conditions moments before the crash.

The lawsuit also reportedly says that the pilot was travelling at 180mph in a steep decline amid the fog. Also, the lawsuit states that the pilot failed to monitor and assess the weather before take-off, as well as failing to obtain weather data prior to the flight. The pilot is also said to have failed to abort the flight upon learning of the cloudy conditions.

An allegation toward the pilot, Zobayan states that he did not avoid “natural obstacles” in the flight path. The lawsuit says Island Express embarked on unnecessary and needlessly risky means of transportation given the conditions. Damages are asked for in the suit for “pre-impact” terror, which regards the emotional distress Kobe and Gianna suffered as the helicopter crashed.

Breaking: Egbe Amofin choose Dele Adesina for NBA president

The hope of the South West to produce the next President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) became brighter during the weekend as Egbe Amofin ni Eko, the Lagos branch of the Egbe Amofin Oduduwa agreed to comply with decision of the umbrella body in its choice of Dele Adesina SAN as its candidate for the presidency of the largest bar in Africa in the 2020 elections.

The chairman of the group, Otunba Martin Ogunleye disclosed this at the meeting of the Egbe on Sunday February 9 in Lagos. “We are true sons and daughters of Oduduwa and we stand on the decision of Egbe made in Ibadan over the endorsement of a single candidate. Another meeting of the Egbe is only 13 days away. Any aggrieved candidate should approach Egbe. But for us, we stand on the decision of the mother group”, Otunba Ogunleye said.

On Saturday December 14, 2019, Egbe Amofin picked Dcn Dele Adesina SAN out of five contestants as its official candidate for the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in 2020.

While other candidates had abided by the decision of the Egbe and stepped down, only on candidate, Mr Babatunde Ajibade SAN has refused to step down, claiming the procedure is not acceptable to him. All entreaties made to him by senior Yoruba lawyers to convince him to respect the decision of the group have not yielded result.

This is as the race of who will succeed the Paul Usoro administration gathers momentum every day.

NBA presidency follows the principles of zoning between the North, West, and East. Edo and Delta States are regarded as part of the West while the South South States of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross Rivers are regarded as part of the Eastern Zone.

In the Zoning formula of the Association, the next president is expected to come from the West. Already many candidates have signified their intention to run.

These include an Abuja based lawyer, Chief Muyiwa Akinboro SAN; Mr Awoniyi Alabi, based in Osogbo; Lagos based Dr Tunde Ajibade; Olumide Akpata; and Adesina Ogunlana.

However, the Egbe Amofin leadership, fearing a repeat of the disgraceful loss it suffered in 2014, decided to endorse only one candidate for the presidency of the Association.

In 2014, three members of the Egbe namely Dele Adeshina SAN, Funke Adekoya SAN, and Niyi Akintola SAN contested for the position.

Because they could not agree amongst themselves, the three lost to Mr Augustine Alegeh SAN from Edo State. The Egbe Amofin regarded the loss as not only shameful but avoidable.

In order to prevent a re occurrence, the Egbe met in August 27, 2019 in Lagos and decided to re-invigorate and strengthen the union for the common good of South West lawyers.

It was decided that the Egbe would present only one candidate for the presidency in 2020.

Present at the meeting were leaders like Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN, Mrs Priscilla Kuye, Chief Tunde Ajomole former Chairman, Body of Benchers, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, Chief Felix Fagboungbe SAN, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe SAN, Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN, Attorney General of Lagos State, all chairmen and secretaries of the 26 branches of the association in the South West.

The meeting which was chaired by Mrs Kuye, a past president of the association, resolved to unite in the interest of all Southwest lawyers, strengthen the association, and present only one candidate for the NBA 2020 Presidential elections.

“I was using it as a way to cope and mourn his passing. My initial goal was to get a mere 100 signatures. Never would I have thought for this petition to get so incredibly big,” he wrote.

The NBA’s current logo features a white silhouette of Jerry West — another LA Lakers legend — and has been around since 1969.

West later became the Lakers’ general manager, picking a 17-year-old Bryant straight out of high school in the 1996 draft.

RIP,’ a Twitter user with the handle @theironlydreams wrote.

Another tweet from the same user claimed that the pilot was performing a very ”aggressive circling maneuver,” that’s why he went outside to film because it was so loud. He added that he ‘observed 1 or 2 circles’ before filming.

According to the Today show, the man’s home has been verified as being under the flight path of the Sikorsky S-76B chopper.

I will continue Kobe Bryant’s legacy – LeBron James ..

LeBron James says he is “heartbroken” over the death of Kobe Bryant and promises to continue his fellow basketball great’s legacy.
Bryant and his daughter Gianna were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday.
LA Lakers star James surpassed Bryant to become the NBA’s third-highest scorer of all time on Saturday, reports the BBC.

James also played alongside Bryant at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, helping the United States win two gold medals.
“Man, I sitting here trying to write something for this post but every time I try, I begin crying again just thinking about you, niece Gigi and the friendship/bond/brotherhood we had!” he posted on social media.

“I literally just heard your voice Sunday morning before I left Philly to head back to LA. Didn’t think for one bit in a million years that would be the last conversation we’d have.
“I’m heartbroken and devastated my brother.

“I promise you I’ll continue your legacy man! You mean so much to us all here. Please give me the strength from the heavens above and watch over me! I got US here! There’s so much more I want to say but just can’t right now because I can’t get through it! Until we meet again my brother!!”
Bryant finished his playing career as the Lakers’ all-time leading points scorer, and is fourth on the NBA’s all-time list with 33,643 points.

In his 1,566th and final game for the Lakers in April 2016 he scored 60 points for the sixth time.
Speaking after the LA Lakers’ 108-91 defeat by the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, which was the day before Bryant’s death, James said: “I’m happy just to be in any conversation with Kobe Bryant.
“One of the all-time greatest basketball players to ever play, one of the all-time greatest Lakers.”

Meanwhile, reports have it that the helicopter carrying former NBA star Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others is believed to have plummeted 500 feet in 15 seconds in heavy fog killing everyone on board.
Details of the doomed 39-minute flight from John Wayne Airport on Sunday morning, which had been ferrying the passengers to a basketball tournament 80 miles away, have now emerged.

Pilot Ara Zobayan had tried to turn the Sikorsky S-76 chopper moments before the impact, banking south west – with some suggestion he lost control of the aircraft as he attempted to clear unexpected cloud.
Audio between the pilot and air traffic controllers reveals he was given permission to fly under special visual flight rules or SVFR, despite the treacherous fog.
But he was forced to circle for a quarter of an hour while the air space was cleared by controllers.

Thick fog engulfed the flight path and conditions continued to worsen in the minutes after takeoff at 9.06am, with Zobayan then circling over Burbank from 9.20am.
Remaining in constant contact with air traffic control at Burbank Airport, the helicopter then asked the Van Nuys Tower if it could rotate southwest at 9.39am which was approved.

Zobayan had been given special permission to navigate the difficult conditions by sight without reliance on instruments, and after the maneouvre he confirmed he had regained flight visuals.
The helicopter then began to accent to 1,500 feet before dropping back down at 9.42am to allow the aircraft to show up on the correct frequency as per requests from air traffic controllers.

However, there was no response from the pilot and 40 seconds before the helicopter plummeted to the ground, the tower said: “You’re still too low for flight following at this time.”
Instead, Zobayan climbed to around 2,125 feet, potentially looking to rid himself of the poor weather, before crashing while traveling at 175mph.
Flight data indicates the chopper dropped at 425 feet in its final 15 seconds before crashing into a hillside in Calabasas at 9.45am.

Experienced helicopter pilot Phillipe Lesourd told The Sun it appears Zobayan had lost control when suddenly spotting low cloud and trying to turn at the last second.
He compared it to driving “on the freeway at a 115mph and close your eyes – what do you think is going to happen”.
Lesourd said choppers are “unstable” and pilots are navigating in 3D rather than straight lines like motorists, and it is “very, very easy to get into spatial disorientation”.
There would have been no other aircraft in the airspace as that had been cleared specifically for Bryant’s chopper to complete its journey without the risk of a midair collision.

And Lesourd said in the valley between the Santa Monica Mountains where it was flying before coming down, it would have struggled to fly above the fog by rising higher.
After climbing, tracking data shows the craft quickly jolted down to just 1,700 feet in what some experts say could have been an attempt to go under the fog – suggesting the pilot was unaware he was flying into a mountain range until too late.

Fans of Bryant demand new NBA logo ..

More than 800,000 fans have signed a petition to replace the NBA logo with an image of Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven other people in California on Sunday.

So far, the petition has over 800,000 signatures.

The current logo is a silhouette of fellow Lakers legend Jerry West, who expressed in the past that he would not mind if the logo was changed. The logo was designed by Alan Siegel. Except for a small change to the font, which was introduced in 2017, the NBA has used its iconic tri-color logo since 1971.

DJ khaled, John Legend, others pay tributes to Nipsey & Bryant ..

The Grammys lined up a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle nearly a year after his shooting death in March of last year. Tragically, his tribute would find itself making room for two as he was ultimately projected alongside Kobe Bryant after the basketball legend passed away earlier in the day.

Earlier in the evening, Nipsey Hussle earned his very first Grammy after posthumously winning the prize for Best Rap Performance for his “Racks In The middle” track. His family, including Lauren London, his grandmother, his brother, daughter, and sister all accepted the award on Hussle’s behalf. As for Kobe, host Alicia Keys called on Boyz II Men for an impromptu performance of “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” before displaying his No. 8 and No. 24 Lakers jerseys above the crowd.
