EndSARs: Seize protest now or Gov’t takes it by force – Sagay to Nigerian Youths

According to him, continuing the protests after all that has been done by the government may be as a ploy by the youths to destabiliise the country using #EndSARS as a smokescreen.

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) on Monday enjoined Nigerian youths to put an end to the #EndSARS protest in the country following the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari and the disbandment of the unit by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Sagay who said the protest is being hijacked by hoodlums added that having done what the youths requested, the federal government may be have no choice than to forcefully put and end to the protests if the youths continue.

Speaking in a chat with News Agency known to Noble Reporters Media, Sagay said having proven to be a listening government, the youths should be satisfied with the steps taken by the government and suspend the protests.

According to him, continuing the protests after all that has been done by the government may be as a ploy by the youths to destabiliise the country using #EndSARS as a smokescreen.

He said “My observation is that hoodlums are already hijacking the protests. The IGP has already disbanded the SARS. So, it no longer exists officially as a unit. The youths refused to stop protesting, they said they wanted the President to issue an Executive Order dissolving it. Executive Orders are not used for that purpose”.

“Executive Orders are lawmaking instruments to make laws, just like National Assembly will make a law, although this type of Executive Order is below that level. It wouldn’t have been an appropriate thing to do”.

“But it’s as if the President is listening, he now came and made this address in which he accepted everything the youths are asking for. He went on to even say that the squad people who are responsible for various harmful and illegal activities will be identified and dealt with. To me, that should be the end of the matter”.

” I believe the youths should be satisfied at this stage. If the youths still come out tomorrow again, then it will look as if the whole demonstration has a hidden agenda for which EndSARS is being used as a cover. It will seem there is an agenda to disturb the stability of the country and engage in activities that may be along the line of #RevolutionNow which itself is the highest crime in our constitution”.

“In such a situation, the government will have no choice than to bring an end to it and nobody will be able to complain then”.

“This is what they were doing in Hongkong for nine months. They got all that they want in Hongkong but they refused and continued protesting; they stopped all commercial activities; stopped flying in and out of Hongkong and paralysed all activities until the Chinese stepped in and were forced to pass the law, completely suspended their rights, and now they are complaining”.

“So, our youths must know how far they should go. Since they have gotten more than they want, at this stage, everyone should quietly go back to their homes and not continue obstructing the highways, disturbing commercial activities in the state”.

“Otherwise, it could give rise to much more serious consequences which they themselves will not be happy about” Sagay said.

Buhari should not attend Giadom’s hosted NEC meeting – Sagay

Advertisements

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has advised President Buhari not to attend the meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, holding today.

Victor Giadom who lays claim to the position of the acting national chairman of the party had called for the meeting.

His call was backed by Buhari who also agreed to attend the meeting by revealing that Giadom’s claim is backed by the law.

In reaction, Sagay stated that Giadom lacked the power to summon such a meeting because his original position of deputy national chairman is not in the line of succession to the national chairman.

Sagay told NRM: “I’m stunned by this turn of events. How can a deputy national secretary have the ambition to be the chairman of a party when you have deputy chairmen and vice-chairmen?

“That is why it is absurd. It does not make sense. His position makes it impossible for him to be the acting national chairman.

“The legal advice the President got is mischievous in the extreme because there is no court order to extend since it does not exist.

“So I would advise the President to step back from this matter and not participate in it.”

Buhari got mischievous legal advice – Sagay allege

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay (SAN) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to attend today’s All Progressives Congress (APC) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting called by Victor Giadom.

Sagay, a professor of law, made the call on Wednesday, insisting that the legal advice the President got was mischievous.

According to him, Giadom had no right to summon the meeting because a deputy national secretary is not in line to succeed the national chairman, adding that the ex-parte order Giadom is relying on to claim acting chairmanship had since lapsed.

He said: “I’m stunned by this turn of events. How can a deputy national secretary have the ambition to be the chairman of a party when you have deputy chairmen and vice-chairmen?

“That is why it is absurd. It does not make sense. His position makes it impossible for him to be the acting national chairman.

“Second, he is relying on an ex-parte order in which he alone was present and the court gave him an interim order in March. These orders last for 14 days.

“He turns up in June to say it has been extended – something that is dead, that does not exist and has lapsed. That is the second absurdity. If he had applied for a fresh order, that would have been different.

“When I heard of the developments, I was stunned into silence. I’m so stunned as to how such a person could be given legitimacy at the highest level.

“The legal advice the President got is mischievous in the extreme because there is no court order to extend since it does not exist. It died two weeks after it was made. The line of succession of the chairman cannot come from the Secretary.

“So the whole thing is an absurdity. I always hear of the theatre of the absurd, but this is one of the worst I’ve ever heard of.”

Speaking further, Sagay said the President should reconsider his position and not attend or participate in the NEC meeting called by Giadom.

“That’s my view. And as someone pointed out, seven days’ notice is needed for such a meeting. Only three days have been given.

“So I would advise the President to step back from this matter and not participate in it”, Sagay said.

EFCC stops working on tinubu’s bullion van because there are no merits to it – Itse Sagay..

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof Itse Sagay has defended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over its alleged cold feet in probing All Progressives Congress Chieftain, Bola Tinubu over the bullion vans spotted at his home on the eve of the 2019 presidential election even after receiving a petition.

Sagay stated that Tinubu should be given a benefit of doubt as he got rich from his own hardwork and investment. He also alleged that the petition was written in bad faith and hatred which is why the EFCC is not investigating.

He said: “If there is no credence in the petitions, what is there to investigate? You know Nigerians are very adept at writing petitions. They like frivolous petitions just as they like litigations. If you know how many petitions are thrown out at the NJC, you will be amazed.

“The Nigerian mind tends to be very vicious in terms of these things. They don’t like Tinubu so they must write a petition against him; a stupid baseless petition.

“My view is that there is no basis for those petitions. There is no merit in those petitions and that is why the EFCC is not acting on them.

“They said they sighted bullion vans in front of his house. Is that an offence? It makes no sense to me. If a bullion van comes to my house now to deliver anything, does that make me a criminal? Even if it is money, and it is my money, what is wrong in that?

“So, I don’t see anything in those petitions. They are just written in bad faith and hatred and they can’t expect the EFCC to join them in this baseless hatred of other people and pursue a vicious campaign of calumny.

“Tinubu was already very rich before he became governor. He is not a man who became rich after he joined the government.

“He worked in the petroleum sector. I recalled that during the course of his fight with Abacha, he had to escape for his life in order to join so many other people like Anthony Enahoro, Wole Soyinka, and many other pro-democracy activists.

“Tinubu was the one funding quite a lot of the organisations and those staying abroad. So, he has always been a man of means.

“It will be ridiculous that having come back to the country, won’t he invest his money in various ventures? So, no one should be surprised that he is a rich man.”
